Laptop wont shut down

    My Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 is only 8 months old. In the last few days when I try to shut down, a message comes up saying "don't turn off power, installing 1 of 1 updates". This often came up before and the laptop just shut down and updated successfully, but now it just won't shut down no matter how long I leave it, until I eventually have to hold down the power button to turn it off. Am I doing damage to the laptop by doing this? It obviously isn't installing what it is supposed to. Any help would be appreciated, but I'm not very computer literate, so the simpler the better.

    Some times this can take quite a while (maybe an hour?) depending on the speed of the computer and what updates are being installed. How long have you actually waited?

    Leave it till it shuts down itself go off and do what you have to do. Sometimes I even go to bed and plug it out in the morning. It depends on the size of the update

    Not sure how to do this, but laptop is working fine except for not shutting down the normal way. It will only shut down by holding the power button down. I tried restarting the laptop & this worked fine, but it still wouldn't shut down afterwords.

    Check on Windows Update as to which update it is trying to install. It is probably failing and not shutting down, and will continue to do so until the update is either successfully installed or set to not to be installed or prompted for installation.

    Checked this and discovered the update which is causing the problem is Windows Live Essentials 2011. It shows in the history where it unsuccessfully tried to update it every day since 31/03/2011, but it failed every time. I tried to install it manually, but the screen froze after 1 minute trying to install it. I had to turn it off by holding down the power button. I then double clicked on the list of failed attempts and it came up saying error details, code 89B. Does anybody know what this error means? There was a link to help on this but it does not list this error.

    If you go to
    Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore

    Run system restore, you can see the recommended restore point or you can choose any of the other restore points if you like.

    Check to see if a system restore point was created before the updates were installed, if there was restore your system back to that point.

    Check to see if it's shutting down correctly, if it is either work from there or try and reinstall the update if you want to/need it. If it still does not shut down, sorry I couldn't help.

    Run windows update manually. Choose custom and uncheck the offending update there should also be an option to not include it again.

    Year system restore to a time prior to the update. Happened on my desktop and thats how I sorted it. Just go back a month or so. Let us know how it goes. :)
