Docking port on IPod touch Damaged

My son has an I touch with a damaged docking port at the bottom of the device. I have been told that the damage to the docking port is bad and it would cost more to fix it then what the device is worth.

Is there anywhere where I can get the docking port and fix it myself. I do have an electronic back ground and all the soldering equipment to do the job.

Does anyone know the procedure about opening the I touch and starting the replacement.

The device is damaged anyway, so trying it myself is not going to hurt any.

Any help would be really greatful

Friend of mine got his iPhone4 wet and as a result the docking port was damaged.
Used http://www.macnician.ie/ who called to his work and fitted a new docking port on site in about half an hour for €70.
Works perfectly now. Can't argue with that price for call out service I'd guess?

Is there a way to get the docking port connector and replace it apart from being told by the Teach in the apple store that it cant be fixed ?.
