I am bringing a car to get the NCT-VRT test tomorrow and nowhere does it say how much it is. is it the standard €50? And the car will be registered in my wife's name, does she have to go to the test centre to show proof of ID?

    Thanks

Price is included in VRT..........you don't pay NCT seperately. Not sure if wife will need to be there. When I went in 3 weeks ago, they didn't give price there and then. Told me that I would receive phonecall within 2 weeks with cost price. Said that anyone could come with payment when they gave me price. This leads me to believe that maybe your wife needs to be present at first visit.

VRT inspection at an NCT centre is different to the €50 NCT test, the test centre doesn't take any money for the inspection, they just charge whatever is the going rate on revenue.ie. Later on down the road when you get the reg you then apply for the NCT and will be charged €50.

Whats the procedure now - Do NCT people actually inspect the car mechanically/structurally (as I believe might have been suggested was the reason for handing it over to them) or is it just an inspection of spec level to work out vrt?

No they just inspect it from a how much cash do we charge for this point of view. When you pay the VRT and get the reg you then apply for the NCT and then they will tell you if it's all good or two cars welded together.

If it was two cars welded together would they charge me a double rate of VRT or would that be exempt under the 5 year rule for after market accessories??:D

sorry to comment on this thread but im booked in tomorrow morning for vrt inspection. ive got my letter of exemption from the revenue which shows my exemption id but it is not the official certificate.

does anyone know if they will accept this letter stating that i am approved for exemption or do i need official certificate?

also does money actually change hands tomorrow or do i pay for the nct when ever i get to book it?

apologies for all the questions ive only just moved down here from n.ireland and still trying to figure out how things work

thanks op i was hoping to get away with just the letter as its from the same guy and has details of the car on it and the exemption id number. i will chance my arm and go on ahead with the appointment tomorrow i haven't got anything to lose :D

You need the certificate I believe.

If you are exempt and have the correct documents no money should change hands during the vrt inspection.

You will pay for NCT when you put the car through NCT. They don't do an NCT as part of the VRT inspection. They will literally look at the car and write down make / model / mileage / VIN / doors etc.

Well all went perfectly :) fortunately the official certificate came through this morning so was able to pop it down to the centre.

The very helpful vrt inspector told me that it might be possible to get the car insured down here using the valid mot instead of booking and paying for the nct. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this? Or if there are any insurance companies that would accept the mot?

MOT isn't valid on any (republic) Irish registered car. If it falls under the requirements (age) for needing an NCT, then it needs to have an NCT.

You do not need an NCT to get insurance.

Insured and taxed the car today however was unable to book nct online so called the helpline. The lady who answered informed me that i am unable to book nct because the number plate wasnt recognised. Anyone got any idea how long this will take? Is it going to be days or weeks?
Thanks for the advice so far its been spot on.

I never said NCT was needed to get insurance, I just pointed out MOT isn't valid in the republic.

That's strange, if you were able to tax the car, then all registration docs must have gotten to Shannon and were processed, so the NCT must not update their database to match that frequently.

Give it another try on monday or tuesday. It certainly shouldn't take weeks!
