Unless you're doing it on wet or loose ground, it would probably be better to get it welded. Is it a saloon or coupe - different engines with the m42 engined coupe being a better choice over the saloon.

I've never done it myself but it would involve draining the oil out of the diff and removing the rear cover to get access to the gears. If you were able to catch the old oil, you could just re-use it - probably wouldn't need to go investing in any new oil. If you were doing it with the diff in the car, you would want to be very careful if you're using a naked flame with the diff's close proximity to the fuel tank.

The green gear is the one you want to weld in such a way it can't move:

The standard diff is open so unless you weld you will be doing nothing other then kicking the arse out a bit at best.

No text speak please. There's no need for it on this board.

is it hard to weld it? about how much would i be looking to pay to get it done by a mechanic?

I'd say an hours labour should be enough, 2 hours tops, to carry out the work - that would depend entirely on what you're being charged in labour.

To weld the diff so its bullet proof you'd need to remove it from the diff casing so that the planatory gears can be welded on all sides.

Gas welding also wouldn't be strong enough.

I cant imagine drifting 318i on tarmac with just over 100bhp
