Having heard so many tales of being scammed by "financial advisors" I am looking for an honest, competent tax consultant. I live in the Limerick area but can travel to Galway. What questions do I ask to know if the tax consultant is honest or competent?

I will start by saying that I am neither, but you do realise that there is a distinction between the two?

Registered Tax consultants must be qualified members of the Institute of Taxation in Ireland, so that's a good starting point for you, that they have the AITI qualification.

And, as you'll find repeated on here endlessly, you should seek the recommendation of friends / family, rather than the advice of anonymous people on an online forum.

What kind of work do you need done?

I would ask who ever you get, have they dealt with your area / the area you are having problems with before. Some consultants dont deal much with particular aspects of tax, others specialise in one particular area e.g. VAT on property. You also need to agree up front what the charges are, for both your sakes, so that there is no confusion later on when it comes to billling you for work done. I would not give a recommendation as I don't know what you are looking for, but I can point you in the right direction ( using a Limerick based consultant ) if you want more advice.

    Hello,

My friend is a good tax guy here is his profile online - http://www.okellysutton.ie/sutton/index.php?page=patrick-o-rourke-fca

also he just set up a blog - http://www.taxationguru.ie

Have a read and if you like his experience give Partrick a call.
He is in Limerick not dublin or Kildare, so shilling 'your friend' to him isnt going to do much good now is it.

Perhaps people should read the original post.

@ Water14 - As Barney said there is a big distinction between 'financial advisors' and registered tax consultants. As i ve said before if you want to get a competent professional of any sort get a couple of recommendations and ring them up and have a chat. Check how long they are in business and if they are registered with a body.

    Hope this helps.
