ive got an 05 a3 tdi and noticed last week that the oil was running low...
i just filled it with the only diesel oil i had in the shed which was castrol 10w 40.. after a while noticed the engine is ever so slightly noisier when revving it through the gears,, looked on the net and turns out the oil needs to be a certain grade,, vw 50700 wheras looked at the bottle and its only vw 50500.. so im wondering will i be doing much harm to the engine with the oil i have in now?. should i be changing the oil and filter?? its due in about 900 miles anyway?. thanks!

5w-30 castrol edge is whats recommended so the oil you put in is slightly thicker - also 505.00 is not recommended at all for anything PD or above - I think it was 505.01 that they use to recommend, which has been superseded by 507.00.

If it was only a small amount, it probably wont do much harm but if it was me, considering the weather forecast for this weekend is supposed to be good, I would do an oil service this weekend.

i would say i put just under a litre of the stuff in... engines got 132000 on the clock so want to be as kind to it as possible!.. will probably change it so

If you only topped up with maybe half a litre then you are likely being paranoid as this amount will not have any effect in the short term(or long term for that matter).

Are you certain that the correct oil has been used in the previous services?

If you put a litre in, personally I would be draining the oil and putting the correct stuff in.

I only have the car a few months and it was always serviced at the dealers before i bought it so im not sure what was used to be honest.. so for a high enough milage tdi engine is it 505.01 spec or 507.00 i need to get?. 5w 30 or 5w 40?. have to confess im not well up on my oils!!

Get 507.00 spec oil. Its the newest standard. I think you need it if you have a dpf but its recommended now anyway. Good oil will keep the engine and turbo happy

130k miles is nothing on the 1.9 tdi
