Hi! Hope you are all well. I am planning 3/4 days cycling in Lanzarote in a couple of weeks with 3 friends. I have been assigned the research role and have been looking up information on the island. 1st stop off point;the vast knowledge of the Boards Cycling Possie!
    Could any of you recommend:

    1) A bike rental company with good quality road bikes.
    2) 3/4 cycling routes to follow over the days; maybe one warm up, one difficult, one very difficult! and easy last day!!
    3) In terms of accomodation;where is the best part of the island to base ourselves; any accomodation recommendations?

I went to Tenerife last year and really enjoyed it;but 2 of my mates found the cycling a bit too tough;that climb up Teide is a long, hard slog!
We were planning on Gran Canaria, but cannot make the relevent flight; so will Lanzarote fit the bill as a cycling destination?

I appreciate all and any feedback!

    Arequipa.

Was there last year, stayed in porta del carmen and found it to be ideal for exploring the island.Rented bikes from a German guy Roland, who was great to deal with.Maybe do a search of my posts and you will quickly find his contact details(thanks again to whoever put up the link for him).
The island is small enough to completely cover, with ease,in two days. There is only one serious climb,in the north,to the observatory but its a good one :).
The roads are great and there is very little traffic. We just used a tourist map to get around but tbh its impossible to get lost.

we go to Porto del carmen ,was their back in december its a super spot for a cycle at all levels their is a flat cycle path that goes a long the coast or you can take to the hills the roads are super and the locals give you loads of space just watch out for the hire cars, we try and get out early ,you can go for a package or book a nice house just out of the town depending on your budget or needs
heres the link to the hire shop http://www.mountainbike-lanzarote.com/index_eng.html hes a top man and will have a bike to suit no matter what your needs ,enjoy

+1 for renner bikes - ask for Peter, he helped me out with a nice carbon bike, and had no problem setting it up the way I wanted [different saddle, flipped the stem and so on].

Lots of nice spins on the island, from Puerto del Carmen there's plenty of choice, you can go into the centre, and then north to famara, or south to el golfo, or west over to la santa and do loops based around those.

Hey! Thank you for your replies; it is good to know that there are some flat/ undulating routes; Tenerife was cool, but hard going!
Would Lanzarote rate up there with the other Canary islands?

Puerto del carmen is an ideal base as its centrally located on the island and has a good plenty of accomdation, facilites, restaurants and is only 15 min from the airport.

Renner bikes are also there on the main strip, just send him an email( the link is above) hes got plenty of good carbon bikes, just bring your own shoes, optional to bring pedals and helmets but he will sort u out with everything including tips on the routes to take.

I wouldnt be expecting much flat cycling, the roads are fairly draggy, throw in stong winds and it always feels like your either going up or downhill.

For your long hard spin head to north of the island and on the way back do the climb of Tabayesco up to the observatory from the eastern side, its about 11km. from there its about 45km back to Puerto Del Carmen but mostly downhill.

its worth a spin out to El Golfo then south to Playa Blanca and on the way back theres a leg burner of a climb to Femes.
Also Timanfaya National Park is nice and the roads are excellent out there and no big hills, not much to see at club La Santa so I wouldnt be bothered too much about that side.

Just avoid Arrecife and Costa Teguise urban areas its very busy and can be tricky if you dont know where your goin, that coastal path mentioned earlier doesnt go very far and you eventually have to go through the town.

    Enjoy

Doedoe, thank you very much for your reply; I have emailed Renner & just waiting for confirmation on flights & accomodation!
Like the sound of the routes you described!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Used this guy and was very good. met us with bikes in puerto del carmen. Found wind very bad when I was there-mainly just varied route from puerto del carmen to la santa- you probably know this but the food in puerto del carmen can be dodgy too http://probikelanzarote.com/

Hi! Just back from Lanzarote. Had a great time.
Day 1: cycled from Costa Teguise up Tabeyesco, Haria, Mirador Del Flor, Orzola and south to Costa Teguise.
Day 2: Cycled across the island to Yaiza, Timanfaya National Park, La Santa, Famara south to Teguise and then back towards Costa Teguise.
Day 3: We did another climb up Tabayesco.

really enjoyed it...think i cycled over 260kms in total.
The roads are a bit rough in parts; not potholed but just really uneven and bumpy.
The wind was the biggest factor; was a constant 25-30km per hour yesterday; was really tough cycling against it and side on... i seemed to burn energy and get dehydrated very quickly: could not stop drinking water... also had to keep eating!

Rode a Trek Madone 3.5 from Renner Bikes; was really nice, solid bike;really liked it!
Peter with Renner bikes was really helpful.
Was back at work today and am fairly wrecked, but no regrets: great trip!

Oh yea, put on lots of sun lotion: feel the wind burnt me a bit!

    Thanks for all the advice!

Yep, that was at top of hill above Tabayesco village.. Right turn to Haria & left back towards Arecife: left also took u a steep 2km up to a radar station at top of the hill.
Cycled part of the Iron Man Course towards Mirador del Flor:there was one particular climb into a 30km headwind: was an absolute b****x! Had to put power all way or get blown backwards; I admire those Ironmen: 9km swim, 180km cycle & 47 km run: & with that wind!!

Think the bike I rode had Bontrager wheels?!
