    Hi.
Can anyone recommend a good free DVD ripper (to avi/mpeg etc).

I have FreeDVDRipper already but for some reason, with some chapters of a DVD it doesn't rip the whole chapter (leaving the finshed product cut short).
    Appreciate any advice.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
But that seems to just rip the dvd to 2 folders, rather than one intact file doesn't it.
I just want to rip the dvd to single files i can keep on my hard drive.

That's due to the structure of a DVD. The root contains video_ts and audio_ts folders, and then there are lots of .vob files inside the video_ts folder along with various .ifo and .bup files. That's whats on the DVD so if you rip it, that's what you get.

It shouldn't be a problem, because most video playing software (VLC etc) and set-top media boxes will recognise the structure and play it as a DVD.

But if you really just want a single file, use MakeMKV. It will take the main feature and put it inside a mkv container, no conversion. And it can rip straight from the disc, no need for external decrypters.

    Fair enough.
The reason i wondered about the 2 folder thing was Free DVD ripper rips to a single file.
Does this make storage a bit messy- presumably you can throw the 2 folders in another folder and it'll still be readable yeah?
Also, if i just want to rip one episode from the DVD, not a whole DVD, is this possible with something like DVD shrink?
    I'll look at MakeMKV.
    Thanks.

Just put the VIDEO_TS folder into a folder with the movie name. You can discard the AUDIO_TS folder if you want. Most software will understand the structure and play it like it was a DVD. For example if you have VLC installed you can just right-click the whole folder and there is an option to 'play with VLC'.

Yep. Most ripping software will show you what's on the disc and let you decide what you want to rip. I don't know about DVD shrink but DVDFab HD Decrypter certainly does. So you can leave out menus, FBI warnings, you can rip individual episodes etc. You can just rip the main movie if you want so it'll start instantly with no menus or trailers. Just pay attention to the titles that it displays - some of them will be menu animations, some will be special features, etc. You'll figure it out very quickly.

Remember that ripping is not the same as re-encoding. So what you end up with will be the exact same quality as the DVD and hence pretty big. If you want to re-encode that's another thing entirely, however ripping is the first stage of that anyway so its worth figuring it out.
