Laptop to TV Quality

Folks, i have connected an older laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000, Win Xp, ATI Radeon x300) to my 42 panasonic full hd tv. I used the s video out on the laptop to connect to scart on my tv. The image on the TV is a bit blurry tbh, i have messed around with all the settings on the ATI graphics card (contrast, flicker rate etc) and managed some small improvements. Has anyone got any experience of a method of connection on a similar setup that will give a better picture (without major cost). The other outputs on the laptop are VGA and USB (no HDMI), on the the TV i have inputs of Scart, HDMI and component...
    Any feedback appreciated

I'm not surprised that it looked bad via s-video, are you sure that your TV doesn't have a VGA connection as that would be a bit better.

nope it doesnt have VGA, just HDMI/scart/component/regular arial connection, surprised actually as i only bought the TV last summer. It appears the only way i can get decent quality is with VGA to HDMI/Component conversion box. Seen some on ebay for cheap (not sure if they are total sh1t though..) as similar conveter boxes on elara etc are up over €150...

Why do you want to hook up the laptop to the TV? Is it for watching movies etc?

surfing the net, youtube, watching movies, maybe some light office work, itunes etc

I thought your money might be better spent on a Media Player if it was just for movies TV etc but seeing as you want to do browsing, iTunes etc. I'm think a cheap HTPC might be something to consider.

I would like a strong HTPC (full hd) and a better surround sound setup etc but it is not something i have money to through at just yet. This is an older laptop being used as a stop gap solution i guess, just upgraded the ram to 2gb so it should do what i want for now. If I were sure one of those cheaper VGA to HDMI converter boxes from Ebay I mentioned (about €40...) was up to the task I will purchase,
    cheers for the feedback
