None of that stuff works, check out real turbo's and superchargers.Google "forced induction" and you will find all the info you need.

    Try this link. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_induction

I dont have loads of money for turbos any suggestions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭iphone4g

You will not get any more power out of your engine buying any of this crap so please don't waste your money.

If you don't have money for proper engine work just keep it serviced and take all unwanted weight out of the car.

The stuff you are looking at does not work.It justs makes noise

If you dont have money to spend on the car then forget about power upgrades.

To be honest the 2 ebay items you linked are gadgets,a good cold air induction system on the right car is a good upgrade i had one on my bora but it was out of necessity otherwise i wouldn't have bothered. The ebay cold air kit you linked would actually reduce the air flow due to that stupid 'turbo fan'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42 Jamesharte

But everyone knows a cold air intake increases hp

so why wouldnt this one http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140521675147&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_3270wt_1139

In most cars they reduce hp, even a k and n one. it depends how poor the standard airbox is

Are you asking for advice or giving it :D anyone with a clue about these things knows a cold air intake rarely increases BHP most people fit them to allow the car to take in increased air volumes to match the modifications you have carried out - thats the reason i did it.

The reason that particular cold air kit would reduce air flow (in my opinion) is because there is a stupid 'turbo fan' blocking the entire inside diameter of the intake and i doubt it can revolve fast enough to allow the volumes of air you car will take in as you drive along to pass through cleanly and efficiently and as such will act as a dam, reducing air intake and reducing power.

so which increases hp, induction kit or cold air or sports air filter

The are all the same thing and in my opinion if you fitted a good one to a 400bhp Naturally aspirated engine you might see a small BHP gain, but on small engine or a force inducted engine i wouldn't bother with one unless you had to.

A good uprated panel filter will be just as good in helping the car breathe a little better.

They do exist and they do work but not for 100 quid and generally not available on ebay.

    http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Turbo-Revolution-The-Coming-Technologies-Part-2/A_110994/article.html

By the time you have spent the guts of 2k on batteries wiring and messing you could just map a belt driven supercharger.

Also don't forget that filter upgrades only really give any improvement at high airflows (e.g. high revs and throttle openings). Oiled types also gunk up quicker and are a pain to clean. I had a Jamex filter on my car for a few years and went back to paper. I didn't notice ANY change in power one way or the other. Even if 2-3bhp was gained at peak power, so what?

Simply changing your paper filter every 6-12 months.

The only one taking the piss on here is you tbh, if you think an ebay supercharger kit for 100 quid will work.

Here's what you'd actually need to install a supercharger - a parts list for a TRD supercharger install

Qty Description Connection or Installation Location Page Part Number
1 Supercharger/Manifold Assembly Main Assembly - Bolts directly to Factory Manifold 11 00602-17620-207
1 Supercharger Belt Replaces Factory Alternator Belt 12-13 00602-17620-026
1 Assembly, Tensioner Plate and Pulley Installed on front of engine 10 00602-17620-082*
1 Kit, Dynamic Tensioner Plate Installation Hardware 9 00602-17620-090
1 Dynamic Tensioner Plate Installed on front of engine 9 00602-17620-015P-4
    1 Bolt, 10 x 1.25 X 70mm Flat Head Bolt Hole A 10
    1 Bolt, 10 x 1.25 X 135mm Hex Head Bolt Hole B 10
    1 Washer, 10mm Flat Bolt Hole C 10
1 Wiring Loom Relocation Bracket Installed on front of engine 9 00602-17620-077
1 Dipstick Relocation Bracket Installed on front of engine 10 00602-17620-078
    1 6 X 10 X 12mm Bolt Dipstick relocation bracket 10
1 6mm Flat Washer Dipstick relocation bracket 10
    1 Kit, Literature
    1 Manual, 3.4 Installation - Revision B 00602-05100-221
1 Gasket, 3.4 S/C Throttle Body Between Factory Throttle Body and TRD Supercharger 14 00602-17620-032
1 EO Sticker Place underneath hood 15
1 Warranty Card (Fill out and send to TRD) ** WARNING POTENTIAL LOSS OF WARRANTY ** see inside covers
1 Warranty Certificate Keep in red envelope, in glove compartment -
1 Hanger, Mirror SC Noise Warning Makes customers aware of Roots-type supercharger whine - 00602-05100-045
1 Sticker, TRD Sport Parts Place as desired on external surfaces of vehicle - 05100-SP100
1 Decal, Supercharger Place as desired. Usually placed on Factory Timing Belt Cover - 00602-17620-042
1 Template for Cutting Front Cover Use to modify Factory Timing Belt Cover 8 00602-17620-2TP
1 Belt Routing Sticker Under hood 15
1 Premium Fuel Sticker Place one on or near fuel gauge, the other inside fuel filler door 15
3 Set, TRD S/C Emblems Place as desired on external surfaces of vehicle 15 00602-17620-SCE
Supercharger Brochure, Catalogs, Promo. Matl. -
1 Hose, Connector and Hardware Kit
    1 1/8

Also, supercharger installs tend to be very custom, and require lots of custom fabrication of mounting points, and various other things. Not to mention you'll need to know your way around an engine bay very well, as you may have to sacrifice air conditioning for the install due to space and pulley/belt constraints.

And that's not even a comprehensive list.

To get the most from it, you're talking about also adding a decent Intercooler, piping for the intercooler, uprated fuel pump, uprated fuel injectors, new mappable ECU and getting a remap

    (there's a LOT i've left out)

So yes, at €100 quid you're having a laugh.

If you don't have the money and time to throw at this, forget about it. Like I said, if you want something faster, get a new car. Might want to think about how you'd get insurance too...

Look just scratch the ebay charger off the list and most ebay gimmicks tbh. You want to make your car faster?? Providing you have a full licence do the Beginners track session with mondello, learn to drive the car properly first best 50 euro you will spend, it will make you respect your car and let you find your limits in a safe enviroment.

Honestly if you want to mod your colt i would stick to visuals like an OEM kit from a Mivec, performance wise you are not going to get much out of it just service it and keep it clean and enjoy it. If you have to go for performance mods dont go any further than an axle back exhaust and induction kit, your wasting your money if you go any further imo.

Like i said before this is just my 2cents its your car , make it what you want.

I wouldn't hold out much hope of improving on The factory 74hp, even the later 16v version of the same engine was only 80hp.
Buy something else if you need more speed.

Things that will increase power (slightly) put arent rubbish tack (and therefore not "cool" I guess):

    Fresh Fully Synth Motor Oil
New Air Filter (standard OEM one, but new)
New Fuel Filter (these generally are never changed in UK and Ireland).
Weight Reduction (remove spare wheel put in can of Tireweld, remove tools, crap floating about etc).
