Post a pic if possible, the keys are quite fragile but sometimes you can get the bit you need on ebay. Presume its the 00-06 shape.

a picture might be a bit too technicnal for me,, its a black toyota key that has the lock and unlock on top then the metal key is coming out the bottom, when i turn the key to start the car it comes apart/splits. 2003 model

The same thing happened to me with my Yaris (00 model).

I got a replacement key without the buttons for €30 ish, a key with the buttons was about €65. I opted for the one without the buttons cause it was cheaper and my alarm was seperate and locked/opened the car.

I found most garages to be around the same price.

I tried to buy one on ebay but the metal bit is actually joined to the plastic so I would have had to get it cut so ended up cheaper to get one from the garage.

All you have to do is buy a blank key about 3 dollars from dealextreme.com. Get the key cut, the rav4 will have been supplied with a little metal plate with a number on it.

bring the number to any locksmith and he will cut your blank.

Then drop the transponder with the remote buttons into it and away you go.

I have done this many times as all the Toyota keys break where the little screw holds them together.

    Total cost about 12 euros

I was under the impression that the transponder chip and the remote control were separate bits and that the transponder was part of the key body?

OP, take out the buttons/battery bit from inside the key and try starting the car.

Here is a photo of what happens and the new blank key before it's cut.

All you have to do is get it cut and put the buttons back in and it work fine.

Thanks ei9go - got mine fixed for the cost of the blank £2.48 (ebay) and £5 to cut the blank key at the local shop. Once cut the key will turn in the ignition and the starter motor operates. However, the car won't actually start until you swap the transponder buttons over into the new key. There must be something in the steering column that communicates with the transponder I guess. Saved a packet compared to Toyota prices! Thanks.
