    Hi all,

    I know it's illegal to hold a phone while driving but here's another thing...

    I have a normal phone holder from my phone in the car. It's not connected to the stereo or anything like that. If I get a call, I will reach up, press 1 button to answer and another to put it on speaker.

    Is this legal or if a Garda saw me doing this, would it be considered the same as having it in my hand?

    I very much doubt it. Otherwise we'd all be in silence and not be allowed touch the on/off button on the radio.

    Yeah that's a good point but I'm always thinking it'd be different if you got "Robocop" who catches you doing it if you get me?

    No - S. 3 RTA 2006 is in the following terms where relevant :-

    "A person shall not while driving a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place hold a mobile phone."

    “ hold ”, in relation to a mobile phone, means holding the phone by hand or supporting or cradling it with another part of the body;
