Specialist pig vet?

    Hi all

I am currently setting myself up for owning pigs. I have filled in herd number forms and am getting the land ready etc.

I did a pig owners course last year and was told that there are specialised pig vets in the country and that I would need to nominate one. I want to give my local pig vet a call and let him/her know I will soon have pigs and will ring him/her should there be any problems.

Now, the pig people on the course said I would find a list of pig vets on the DVO website but either I'm going daft/blind or they just aren't on there!

I'm in the east Galway area and would appreciate any help on this!

    Cheers!

I think Mike Burke, Clooncahir, Mohill, Co. Leitrim is the nearest pig specialist vet to you.

Don't have a phone number for him unfortunately.

Murray and Curran in Loughrea should be a first port of call. I think its Mr Curran that's the older of the 2. I know someone close to there who went through the same hoops as you to get theirs and he was able to help them out at the time- but it was a couple of years ago. In the end he found out that he didn't have to nominate someone to get the herd number but the vet there was very competent with the pigs but that could have changed in recent years - (I think its Mr Curran, but it could be Mr Murray - both of them are working out of the one practice anyway - and its the older man that you want - he's in his 80's and still working away). Just call them up and talk to Mary there and she will sort you out. Not many pigs in that area these days so its not something that the younger vets specialise in. :pac:

Never heard of that practice as pig vets Reilig, and as I read the query, the OP was looking for a pig specialist. Mike Burke in your own county is such a specialist (and he is fairly young by my standards!) - he does nothing but pig work, and he travels all over the country..

You are right, though, I don't think there are any further west.
