Bought a 80GB PS3 from GAME in The Square in October '08 and it decided to stop reading discs today.

I'm not sure if it had a 2 year or 3 year warranty, though. Does anyone here know?

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, warranty is for 1 year.
But have a read of this thread, it basically says that the PS3 should be expected to last a reasonable amount of time - a little over 2 years for you is not reasonable.
Have a chat with the shop where you bought it, if no joy then you may want to go the small claims court route.

I assume you have not voided the warranty.

I think you forgot the link to the thread you're talking about, lol!

Anyway, just got off the phone with GAME and the guy said that there's a 1 year warranty and gave me a number for Sony so I could give them a ring.

Called Sony and they said it'd cost €100 for a refurb. No thanks. Going to go and get a new console. Also, no I haven't voided the warranty.

EDIT: Just realised that I forgot to ask the guy from GAME how much the non-bundle (E.g. LBP2, GT5 etc.) slim PS3s are. Anyone know?

I bought a PS3 slim in HMV the other day and they asked if I wanted a three year extended warranty for €29. If the five years SOG for electronics actually applied they wouldn't be able to get away with charging people for three years, surely?

If they let people know that by european law they are protected by a mandatory warranty that extends longer than 1 year then they wouldn't be able to charge that then.

OP you could and should try the small claims court and check out that thread. People have taken the shop to court and won so if you reference thos cases you'll win your case.

Sounds interesting - what's this law?

Funny that, they tried to charge me €160 euro just last week.€160 euro for someone else console which has already proved itself to be faulty once at least once in its lifetime.

    Told them were to go

Read the thread that F1ngers linked to above.

I have a small claims case pending at the moment and others have gotten free replacement consoles from the retailers

You're protected by a 3 year warranty automatically. However the items sold must be of merchantible quality and fit for the purpose they are intended. People have argued that a PS3 which Sony claims to have a lifetime of 10 years should last longer than 1-3 years and have won their case.

That European directive was not passed into Irish law as our own existing one was better. There's no set times in how long something should last all but as with all the small claims made less than 3 years is too short, other claims that can be found on consumer forum here show much older tvs and the like getting some form of repair/replacement/refund.

Are you serious?! How the hell can they get away with that?!

If that's the case, then how come GAME wouldn't take back my console? It'll be 3 years come October 5th. They told me that consoles bought from them have only a 1 year warranty and that I sould call Sony.

Also, this isn't the first time I've had a PS3 stop reading discs. My first PS3, which I bought in December '07, stopped reading discs in October '08 and GAME gave me a replacement. That's how I got my current PS3. Now that one breaks after, what, 2 years and a half or something?

EDIT: BTW, GTA4 caused the disc drive to go bust in both the PS3 from '07 and my current PS3. The game would freeze and then I'd have to pull out the plug because the console wouldn't even turn off.

Its not a 3 year warranty as such but it is covered under the sale of goods act in Ireland.

Its a very long thread but you really should read all of it as it explains everything. If you fight for your consumer rights GAME will have no choice but replace your console FOC.

    The thread is here:- http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055795516

Because Game along with other games stores don't want you to know your consumer rights because it means big losses. Basically what they did is illegal.

You should read that thread that superg linked to.
