I'm just wondering if the Smith machine is ok to use for compound exercises. I'm trying to bulk up and lift as heavy as possible (until failure). The thing is I don't have a gym buddy to spot me. Will I still notice big results if I use the Smith machine and lift heavy with that.

Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

There okayish for a few shoulder/chest pressing movements.I Also do shrugs in it once in a blue moon cause its handier.I wouldn't advise anyone to squat in it,I did it a few times and felt like I was breaking myself..

Workign out with a spotter is still a better option than working out with a smith machine

    Deadlifts - no spotter needed
Squats - in a squat rack or cage, no spotter need
Bench press - a spotter helps, but fine to do sole, no prob tio grab somebody nearby if moving up weight
Overhead presss - no spotter needed

    you get the picture
