Do you ever think that society programs us to basically do the same thing? Born Die. In between find job and get married. And all the other meaningless things we do in between.

Whats makes a individual an individual?

The Dash – Linda Ellis (by permission)

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
    From the beginning..to the end.

He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears, 1964-1994
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth..
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

    For it matters not, how much we own;
    The cars..the house..the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you”d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
    That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’’s true and real,
    And always try to understand
    The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
    And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
    Like we”ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile..
    Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy’’s being read
With your life’’s actions to rehash..
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

If you find marriage meaningless one might suggest that you don't do it

Do you know what, you're absolutely right. No point having unrealistic expectations

Doesn't mean that you shouldn't have any aspirations to work towards or take the odd amazing adventure but be happpy with what you have at least.

And enjoy your comfort, there's few things better imo

Just do what makes you happy. Dont think about what is viewed as "normal" by everyone else. The meaning of life is to find happiness.

Lying on the couch makes me happy, people may call me lazy, so what it makes me happy. :D

society doesn't your parents friends classmates programs you (sorry informs your choices) its called socialisation

Its why when you feel like making a poo you go the toilet you don't do it right there in the middle of sitting room.

you are given a basic template of how to live a life with other people and the rest is up to you

OP ask yourself: if you could do anything with your life what would you do?

    A day spent wasted isn't a wasted day *

Ok, if you were to spend every day wasted then it may be a problem, but every now and again it's a gem!

 Eh?! Beg to differ. Only, when I go out to poo in the ditch, I do so because I Don't want to be skidding about in it and breathing it in, thank you.

I can assure ye it has sod all to do with 'society' curbing some instinct to just drop my guts right there, where ever I stand.

One more thing that differentiates me from a cow. And, seemingly, a person from Kerry?!

Whether you believe in after life or not we're all here for a short time, not a long time.
Enjoy it as best you can & don't get caught up in the meaning of life, think about it too much & it could pass you by.

I used to have very unrealistic expectations from life, but knowing I would never live up to them depressed me so i gave up on them. Now, I just get up every morning, do a days work, am nice (enough) to those around me and dont cause any one any harm. Thats good enough for me.
