3D movies rip-off...

Adults are charged 13.20 for a 3d movie. An 'ordinary' movie for adults is 11.50.
Kids are charged 9.90. Kids are 8.40 for an 'ordinary' movie.
Both of those prices are from UCI, for an evening movie.

My own kid just pointed out to me that everyday LIFE is 3D and is wondering why it costs us so much more to see the 3D movies, even when you bring your own (gotten from previous movies) 3D glasses. Rip-off Ireland is alive and well it appears:rolleyes:

There are much cheaper cinemas than that. I went to the cinema recently and cost me 8 euro. In general the 3D films are more expensive and the cheek they don't allow you to keep the glasses so I don't know what the extra few euor is for

It's like he really just 'copped-on' that life is 3D. He thought 3D movies were from outerspace and wondered why we had to save up to go to one...and now he's like 'wft' (although he hasn't said that)

Might defeat the purpose driving to waterford for the cinema lol

Seriously though, how can they charge so much extra for 3D when, as he says himself 'my life is 3D'...

Probably to cover the cost of buying 3D projectors

Huh? 3D is much better I agree than the normal screen, but it should cost the same. I don't think you should drive to Waterford ha but if you happen to ever holiday there than visit the cinema:)

My local cinema (in Ireland) will only charge you extra if you didn't bring your own 3D glasses.

Why the hell would you attend a cinema that charges €11.50 for an adult and (even worse) €8.40 for a child?

    truth about 3d:

    - turning a movie into 3d doesnt cost that much compared to the over-all budget of making the movie itself.
    - So pretty much 3d movies are a way to charge more for the same movie.
    - 3d glasses are inexpensive to make.
    - After a few mins your average person will forget about the fact its "in 3d"
    - 3d technology hasnt changed that much since the classic 1980's 3d movies.

then why did you make it out to be a problem specific to ireland, if you clearly didnt know if it was the norm or not

The cinema in Drogheda is a rip-off. €8 for a standard adult ticket and if its 3-d, another €3 on top of that.
...And thats on top of bad conditions, screens ALWAYS out of focus and/or they cut the sides/top/bottom off the widescreen movies so that is there is text, its cut off and unreadable.
(Don't get me started about one adult that works in it that ALWAYS has a sour puss on her face and is obnoxious as hell)

If we want to see a film, we now go thirty miles away now to see it. The one in Drogheda is a disgrace.

    SGC dungarvan

    3D ADULT Tickets at €9.00
3D ADULT MATINEE Tickets at €8.00
3D CHILD NEW Tickets at €6.50
3D FAMILY NEW Tickets at €28.00
3D SENIOR NEW Tickets at €7.50
    3D STUDENT Tickets at €7.50

i just noticed that since ive last been there to a 3d film you must pay 1.40 for the glasses but it tells you to keep them and reuse them.

O2 have an offer for €4 cinema tickets all over the country. 99% of 3d films have 2d screenings, just go to them.

Because I can't represent the rest of world cinema's, because I only go to the cinema in Ireland. Is that a bit clearer for you:confused:

If you dig a bit deeper, you'll see that even 02 charge an 'extra charge' if the movie is 3D.

Try booking one. You'll be charged an extra 1euro minimun for a 3d movie.

No need for your sarcasm. The point being that even th 02 'special offer' isn't that special when you book a 3d movie.

Wait till they come up with 4-D films, where you can perceive all moments of the film simultaneously. That'll cost at least a tenner.

Well it's still half the price of places you quoted earlier.

    Sounds pretty special to me.

all movies are a rip-off, a rip-off money-wise and a rip-off of older better movies. In Dublin the savoy is probably the cheaper option for 3D movies, personally I cba with them, such a gimmick.

Yeah - the tech is the same - just requires new and expensive screens, along with new and expensive projectors to show the movies.

I work in a cinema, the line we are told to use is "you are paying for the experience".

Seriously though, the Digital 3D projectors cost a fortune, you need to get a silver screen to show them on, instead of the normal white one and you need to get new glass that's polarised in a specific way in the port hole between the projection room and the screen (which is incredibly expensive).

That's why movies are more expensive in 3D

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 5,028 Mod ✭✭✭✭G_R

Oh and also, to the OP, I'm familiar with UCI's pricing structure - you are paying for Premier seats.

For a standard seat, an adult 1s 9.80 peak, 7.80 off peak. Then for 3D there is an uplift of 1.70. For a child its 6.70 all times, and 3D is an uplift of 1.50 on top of that. Then if you need glasses it's an extra euro. If you get a premier seat, its an extra 1.70 again on top of those prices.

Why does it need a new white background to project onto? Or new projectors? The film sent out would be pretty much the same from what I've seen of how to make 3D content is made.

I am glad I can't see 3D. No corporate shill would convince me even if I could, however.

I'm not too sure about the screen, but it has to be silver, not white.

As for the projector, the projectors project two images onto the screen, one for the left eye, one for the right. so it goes left, right, left, right but it does this 28 times a second (as far as I know, that number may be wrong) so you can't tell that the image is changing. The left eye of the 3D glasses blocks out the right image, and vice versa with the right. So your mind is tricked into seeing a 3D image

I think Cineworld charges a lot less. It's on Parnell street.

Not by much, but it's still some savings: http://www.cineworld.ie/cinemas/75?fallback=false&isMobileAgent=false

    Didn't know that.

Had a quick look on wiki though and they're saying the 4K projector projects two 2K images which would make me assume it can be done through the same projector.

Wasn't really aware it required new equipment, if it does then I guess that justifies the cost somewhat.

There is projectors that can do both, but I'm guessing that the majority of cinemas in the country would have the old 35mm projectors, and would need to buy new Digital ones to be able to show 3D. I know that was the case where I work, but can't speak for the others

I suppose it could have been the big incentive to move to digital.

The production methods for 3D cinema are more expensive than regular cinema, as such, the companies charge the cinema's more to ensure they meet their targets and the cinema passes this on to the consumer to ensure they meet theirs.

Most films come out in 3-D and standard versions, so you can normally take the option of paying the lesser price if you want to.
