    Hi OP,

Getting into the HSE Ambulance Service / Dublin Fire Brigade as a Paramedic in Ireland is quite difficult as they only recruit a small number when required and these are the only PHECC (Pre Hospital Emergency Call Council) accredited training institutes for Paramedic Training at present.

You can of Course pay for PHECC Accredited EMT Training from many private training institutions at a cost there may be work available as an EMT Through the private Ambulance Services.

Another route is the Voluntary’s which are PHECC accredited and can teach up to EMT Level criteria for this training would be down to the organisation themselves.

Order of Malta Ireland - http://www.orderofmalta.ie
    St John Ambulance - http://stjohn.ie
    Irish Red Cross - http://www.irishredcross.ie
    PHECC - http://phecc.ie

civil defence, in my opininion is great, i think in dublin they do alot of fire training, but, ring them and find out where the ambulance training is.
red cross, order of malta, st johns are good too.

don't worry about your age, if you feel too old sitting in the beginners first aid class, then maybe pay for a first aid course yourself first, but i don't think you'll have an issue with it.

it is true that volunteering (or any ambulance work) could be an advantage in getting the job, but lots of paramedic recruits NEVER did any first aid before joining. so don't worry!:)

you are the right age now to join the ambulance service, most people only get into the service in their late 20's or early 30's. maybe the extra life experience shows at interview.

it's a great career, best of luck with it.

The jobs are usually advertised through HSE & public jobs. But as you asked with regards to getting a feel for it all the orgs do pretty much the same thing in terms of what we do. Civil Defence, Red Cross & Order of Malta are all on the 3rd edition of the clinical practice guidelines while St. John Ambulance are on the 2nd edition.

Don't know about the age profile in the other orgs but in Order of Malta there's pretty much a wide range of ages in each unit. I know my unit average age is about 27.

If you want anymore info feel free to PM me a map of our units can be seen here.

Best of luck with whatever vol org you join I'm sure you'll get great enjoyment from it.
