Was just wondering if some of you guys could give me some advice here, would be great.

I'm thinking about trying to get my hands on an old broken m4 as a doner body so that I can rip out all the internals and put new top of the range internals in.

Was just wondering has any body here tried this before, and how has it worked out. Also would like to know what exactly would be needed to do all this and would it be easy enough for someone that wouldn't know a massive amount about fixing aeg's...?

well, it can be hard for the in experienced, BUT, you only learn by trying :) If you do this, you may end up knowing aegs back to front :)

    What you'd need....

    Gearbox shell
    gearset
    anti reversal latch
    piston
    cylinder
    piston head
    tapet plate & springs
    cylinder head
    air nozzle
    wiring loom and trigger unit
    selector plate
    Paitence
    alcohol
    music

With that lot you should be able to build a gearbox, but dont forget the hopup, hopup unit and barrel, vital components too :)

I say good luck, its hard, but its the way I learned at first too :)

'i dont know what to do, what the heck, I'll try'

    good on you :)

one thing i can say is be prepared for the amount of money its gonna cost.
ive just finished building a gearbox from scratch and im afraid to mention how much money it cost for parts and shipping.
but youll have great satisfaction when your finished and have it running as good as it can.
kitten forgot to mention a set of shims, very important, and a safety lever

I'll apologise for all the questions in advance...! Is their one or several makes that are "high end" components that I should look for..?

Also do I have to or should I keep all the components to the one make or does it matter..?

Is their a particular website or retailer that ye found good to purchase the components from...?

Also wil I find it hard to pick up an old m4 for the body and will it matter if it's full metal or and abs material when I'm going to be using high end components...?

What tools will be needed for the job..?

Once again sorry about all the questions I'm tryin to get as much information about this as I can so I'm not going into this "blind" or with only half the information and end up making a mess of it. Also is their anything that ye can think of that I may have over looked...?

Yep, forgot shims! lol, woops! And the safety should be on the reciver, and anti reversal latches come with the gear set.

retailers: ehobbyasia is a good one, plenty of parts, cheap, there isnt one brand, but several, have a look at technical topics here on boards for inspiration and advice on specific parts. :)

Tools: Various screwdrivers, hex drivers, an allen keys, and some needlenosed pliars, Also, a strong flat magnet is a good idea. (holds gears in place etc (really helps ))

There really is no "best manufacturer". Some people may tell you its Systema. But their parts are either muck and overpriced (pistons), or slightly better than alternatives and overpriced (gears). You really have to look at every part individually, and do research on the current best of. They may have some parts worth getting.

The only thing I can recommend for sure is a motor. As I haven't looked into parts in a while, but I recently bought a new one. A few years ago the Systema Magnum was one of, if not the best motor. But instead of paying €100, have a look for a SHS/Element/5ku/AMP/Matrix Magnum motor for roughly €28. They are all exactly the same motor, just re-branded. There are torque up, and high speed versions. I would go with a high speed motor, as torque up are generally only for really high fps guns, or speeding up trigger response.

Here is the 5ku version from ebairsoft, but its out of stock. I got the SHS version here, this is pretty much the only site that I could find any of these motors in stock. So don't think about it too long, because who knows when they will be restocked.
