Yes if you also download VLC to play it.

How does this VLC thing work? I'd like to use Youtube at school too

It's just another player, though I find it plays most things, even files that Windows Media player messes up with, looking for 'codecs'.

If you download the .flv file which is 'behind' most youtube videos, VLC will play them perfectly in a classroom situation, if installed on the classroom computer/laptop.

I use a Firefox add-on called Video DownloadHelper to download the .flv files - they are often in a variety of qualities on a youtube page.

Try using camosneak.com It's a proxy but I've been using it for the last couple of months to show youtube videos etc. My Leaving Certs told me about it:D

If using Firefox I find the add-on 'easy you tube downloader' very easy/good.

Hope this helps as you tube can be a great resource. :)

..there are now varying levels of security for IT protection with in schools
...some of them now allow for youtube access...see will your IT person change your level for you!

Level 4: This new level allows acces to the same websites as level 3 but also allows access to ‘youtube’, ‘personal storage category’ and other similar types of sites.
Level 5: This new level allows access to the same websites as level 4 but also allows access to ‘personal websites category’, and other similar types of sites, such as Wordpress blogs etc.
Level 6: This new level allows access to the same websites as level 5 but also allows access to ‘personal relationships category’ including Social Networking sites and other similar types of sites.

Your IT person won't be able to change it. If NCTE are providing your broadband, as they are for most (all?) schools in the country, it will take a request, signed by the School Principal to change the level of security the school has.

    Savetube.com

You can save the video or rip the mp3 track. I insert youtube videos into PowerPoint.

Get a good codec pack e.g. VLC, FFDshow, DivX, Quicktime. Get them all and you'll have no probs!!

    You can also use

    http://www.keepvid.com

You insert the youtube video's url and it will offer you download links.

There is a portable version of vlc. You download it and put it on a USB stick.

So there is no need to install it on to a school in the computer, you can simply run the videos from your USB stick.

    Downloadable from http://http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Portable/3000-13632_4-10871918.html

    hi,
I am hoping to show a youtube video tomorrow but it is blocked in my school too. I haven't a clue how to use the above mentioned ideas and don't know what a .flv file is. how do I save the video I want onto my laptop to show it in school tomorrow.
    Thanks T

I just tried to download the vlc fthing and it told me this type of file can harm my computer. Is that true or just microsoft not wanting me to use another programme?

It's an .exe file, which needs access to your computer hard drive to install.
Microsoft Windows treats its users like complete morons and warns them about any exe file running.

VLC is perfectly safe as long as you have got it from the official site as linked to earlier in the thread.

If you use Firefox, get the add-on called Video DownloadHelper.
This will put a small icon in your toolbar every time you visit a page with a downloadable video file.

Go to the YouTube page with the file you want, click on VideoDownloadHelper to download the file (it will be a flash video file - .flv) save it and use VLC to open it when you want to play it.

If you can't download the file you want, feel free to PM me the address of the page on YouTube and I'll do what I can to help download it and get it to you.

Savevid.com is what I always use - I use a safari browser not firefox.

You can get your school to contact the NCTE to reduce its internet security filter. Originally all school broadband was filtered on the same level, but last year the NCTE introduced 5 different levels of security. As a default your school is probably on the highest level. As far as I remember level 2 allows Youtube and most common sites but still filters out the really nasty sites - eg Hard Porn & Violence.

The security is a bit of a joke though, since almost all the kids know ways round it.

Uh - No, there is real digital divide. How can students learn to turn on a computer is the big question ?
On the other hand, there are student who have impressive skills, but i personally have never known students to be able to bypass the system.
I'm not saying its not possible.

I know the NCTE update their proxy list as quickly as possible, but they can't get them all.

Recently we discovered ours are also using small .exe programmes which they save in all sorts of hidden places.

    Here is the NCTE Filter levels;

Level 1: (This level is the same as the existing Level B) This is the most restricted level and only allows access to ‘Scoilnet’ and other educational websites, and is used by a small number of schools.
Level 2: This new level allows acces to the same websites as ‘level A’ now renamed 'Level 3' but with the ‘Games’ category blocked.
Level 3: This level is the same as the existing Level A, and is currently used by the vast majority of schools.

Spurious, It good to see that your students are deft at computers, even if it does cause .exe pollution. I hardly ever get a chance to bring students to a computer room but when I do, I find that they have very poor basic skills. There is such a huge digital divide thats growing all the time.
