    Hi there,

Been trying to sell a car for a while now and cannot shift it privately. I was wondering is there any garages or dealers who buy cars for cash? I know Windsor motors do it but car must be at most 4 years old. Trying to sell a 6 year old.

If you do go down this path then don't expect to get anything near the market value for it. They will most probably offer you well below it's trade value in order to make a profit on it.

Can you post a link to the advert as we might be able to give you tips on how to make it more attractive to a potential buyer?

Yeah I'd expect to get a trade in price via a garage. Here it is:

    Much appreciated.

Not "trade in" price, "trade" price. Trade price is the price they will sell it onto a smaller dealer in the motor trade. This price is well below the market value of the car as it will have to be serviced, tided up, valeted, offer a warranty with it and still make a profit from the sale.

Looking at your advert, the first thing that I notice is that the price is too high. Your one is the 5th most expensive out of 22 other 2005 Honda Civics on carzone.ie. This similar one is also on the expensive side but is still nearly €1000 cheaper than your one:

You need to adjust your asking price if you want to get some interest.

Lol I should've seen that coming! :-p you are probably right but the thing is not all cars are the same. Id like to take a look at that one compared to mine. If quality and condition are not important then I'd say you have a point. There is room for haggling, but I was offered more as part of a trade in. If garage can buy it for more and sell on with a profit then I'd say that one is either under priced or has got something wrong with it.

Point taken though. I probably need to lower it a bit.

What they say you are getting on a trade in and what you are getting in reality are not the same. They often artificially inflate trade in prices to make you feel you're getting a better deal. Bazz26's advice is bang on.

The 'trade in' value you were given will have included a discount that other buyers will have been able to get anyway. You might for example have been offered €8k trade in but I might have been offered an €2-3k cash discount on exactly the same car with no trade in.

As pointed out above the garage will offer the 'trade' price for it which will be well below either the private sale or trade in value. Price drop aggressively and you'll sell it...

Mmm. Ok thanks for all the advice. Gotta think about this. Really fantastic motor but I don't think it's possible to get that across without people looking at it. Might lower it with the intention of getting more than asking price but that's highly unlikely. I might just hang onto it.

    Thanks again.

Unless the other car is complete dirt (which it doesn't look like from the photos) then people will not pay a large premium for yours over the other.

Also garages just love to fudge figures when it comes to trade-in pricesso I would not pay much attention to trade-in figures, a garage could allow you €10k for your car but if the car you are trading against is €5k more than the going rate for similar cars then the trade-in price is not so hot. The only figure that matters when trading up is the cost to change price.

You'd be surprised at the condition of most cars out there. I've seen some that look great on the web but turned out to be in appalling condition. Scratches and shoddy, torn, dirty interiors. Without a doubt I would call mine immaculate condition compared to what I've seen. But people just see a price, see one for cheaper and don't even give you a consideration. I fully understand that. It's just too painful to take such good care of a car and in the end have to sell it for the same as everything else. The more I think about it I might just keep it tbh. I can lower it a bit but not as much as is apparently needed.

Damn the Internet with it's pictures and details! Bring back the days when people would come and look at the car just to see what it's like.
