    Hi Guys,

So i'm going to my local vw garage to order a brand new golf in the next few days. I have been looking around at finance the last few weeks for some of the money that i need to borrow and the VW finance package is the best rate at 5.9% compared to 11.9% at Bank Of Ireland and I think the in-Credit-able Union rate is 9%. Im just wondering if anyone else has used the VW finance? Are there any hidden charges that Im missing?

Also whats your opinion on the VW 1.6 TDI Golf?

    Thanks!

Its certainly a good rate, I think the only difference is you need a nice chunk of a deposit upfront?

While many will prob find it fine, I would personally go for the 2.0L 140bhp.

The 1.6TDI is the replacement for the boards long time worst enemy 1.9TDI, and although relatively new, seems to be pretty reliable thusfar.

If you are happy with 105bhp then the 1.6TDI would probably be ok, but as a personal preference I would be shooting for a 2.0L 140bhp comfortline.

Would you consider looking for a 2010 GTD or similar with low miles?

You can get the new 150bhp 1.8 diesel Mitsubishi Lancer for around 20k.Suppose to be a great engine ( double overhead cam, variable valve timing )

Beautiful looking machines as well when they are spec'ed up a bit.

I had the Mitsubishi ASX on test last week with this 1.8ltr 150hp engine, it was great. Really economical and decent to drive, the Lancer seems to be a good car too, with that engine it would go on the smell of Diesel.
    Worth a look OP

Thanks guys...Yeah the reason I was looking at the 1.6l is the cheap road tax and to keep my insurance down.

I am going for the highline model with some extra's! I was told by the sales man that trade in value in 3 years would be around 16k? Do the Golfs hold there value compared to others? The car im looking at is costing around 26k!

I didnt realise that the lancer is around 20k - it would be more car for my money i suppose but I would rather go with a German car!

One other question - most of my driving is local during the week with two long trips every weekend - I read here stories with diesel cars and not driving them enough causing engine problems?

    Thanks!

Your long trips at the weekend should mean you will be fine with a diesel. They just need to be opened up regularly instead of tootling around town constantly.

If you are concerned that much about resale and depreciation, then why buy new? Why not consider the 2010 model I linked above?

I said this before here, but personally, if I were landing 26k on a car I'd want more than 105bhp, the 2.0L will be cheap on tax too so don't get hung up about that.

I'd also look for something slightly mote powerful. Something relatively powerful will make longer trips less of a chore.

Afaik the finance requires a sizable lump sum upfront. last time i applied anyway..

I have VW finance for an Audi, and it depends whether or not there is a trade in. Some special offers have a large lump payment at the end. Make sure to check this. The rate for mine is fixed so I can't make additional payments, but I can close the loan early.
    Seemed all Ok for me.

Thats great, I'm sure your very happy with it. I have a 2003 1.6 Golf, and it's a really great and reliable car, and it's frugal on the petrol as well. I remember when I bought my Golf and I was amazed at how much power the Golf had compared to my 96 1 litre Polo which was also a great little car.:)
