Hey guys. After over 5 years of use of my dell inspiron laptop Im looking to upgrade. I need a laptop that is capable of working most engineering type programs (solidworks etc) but doesnt have to be optumised for complete use of the program as I will have access to more powerfull computers.

Id also like to be able to play games but not at a high setting. Ive been looking into HP and Toshiba but recently ive thought of Asus.

What do you guys think? any recomendations? Preferably around the 600 700 euro mark?

    Thanks.

nothing wrong with Asus - their best segment is netbooks though.

toshiba and lenovo are good brands.

www.saveonlaptops.co.uk have good deals. you didn't say what you are looking for in terms of screen size?

here's a nice toshiba with mid-level graphics card and nice high-res screen.

ASUS is a good brand, but so is Toshiba. Either would be great choices.

Couldn't recommend HP, mostly down to their Customer Service but there are a few design considerations I found lacking in my pavilion.

Thanks for your replies guys. Just wondering what you think of this? http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ASUS_N53JG-SX205V_1034292.html

Nice device and seems like a decent price. The graphics card is good but it wouldnt be the best for games (not bad but not great). So if you want a gaming laptop maybe look elsewhere, otherwise I like it as long as the hard drive is 7200rpm and not 5400 (which I doubt it)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah games isnt a big deal. Its not why I am buying it. Just nice to be able to play something now and again. Yeah just checked on their website and the hard drive is 5400. Would that be a huge difference?

Well it becomes the slowest cog in the wheel, a bottle neck of sorts. It may not be a massive problem to you but it would to me. Do you like dell? I can check the specs and price on a similar dell model and post the results. If the price of the device here was better then you could just buy a 7200rpm drive and swap it out for the one that comes with the device.

That's a netbook though, not quite what the OP's after.

I dont mind Dell really. I have an inspiron which is only causing me trouble recently and I've had it for over 5 years id say. I was looking at an xps 15 but the real downside to me was the size, some of the reviews and the fact that there was no VGA port.

If you have any Dell suggestions I wouldn't mind hearing them :)

Grand. I'm out and about now but will post some suggestions later on. You're happy with a 15inch screen.

It has a HDMI port so no need for a VGA port and if you need a VGA you can buy a VGA to HDMI adaptor. Its the best value for money out there IMO. :D

Yeah I understand that, But my main gripe would be the need to do presentations on it which ill need it for. As, from what ive read, the HDMI doesnt allow it to appear on the laptop screen and the projector.

Ok I took a look at dell and i cant get a price as good as that for similar spec. I think what you could do is buy that laptop and buy a smaller 7200rpm hard drive and swap them when you get the computer. Then you'd have a pretty good machine.
