    Hey,

I am looking to buy my first car cause I am just after getting a new job and need something reliable for every day travelling!

But. . .Im clueless! My budget is about €1,600 or so and I have a few types of cars in mind. . .Only want a 1 or 1.1 litre. . .

I've been looking at a Volskwagon Polo, Peugeot 206 or an Opel Corsa. . .

I like the look of the polo or peugeot but have heard that the peugeot isnt a great car. . .

Any advice or feedback from drivers of these cars would be great!! Thanks in advance! :D

A Nissan Micra, Toyota Yaris or Ford Fiesta would be a better buy than the cars you have mentioned.

Bang on re: alternatives... Polos are a disaster, at least my other half's one is... If Toyota's are meant to be the most reliable car in the world, then I can confidently say that her Volkswagen is the most unreliable. It's always breaking down (fuel pump relay, dampness, ignition, oil pressure sensor, and door lock problems in last year alone). Admittedly it's an older model (~1999) but it's been in the family since first bought and has been properly looked after. Perhaps it's a one off but give me a Toyota, Nissan or Honda any day.

I'd agree - go with something Japanese if you can... Yaris, Micra or the very basic Swift generally tend to be more reliable. Volkswagen Polos of and age fitting that budget range often have electrical problems, and Corsa's are hard on ball joints according to anyone i know that has/had one.
Don't know much about the 206 - though if doing your own maintenance, most people say they are a nightmare to work on. Fiesta's in your price range need to have been looked after.. I know of a few that have had to have brake lines replaced due to corrosion.

thats good to know. . .im so sick of looking at cars at this stage but i dont want to end up buying lots of trouble either! maybe il steer clear of buying a polo/corsa so. . .. .

You'd probably scrape a 99 yaris for your budget. Easily the best option.

My fiancé has had her 2001 Yaris for 8 years, and I just passed my test in it, and in that whole time, 150,000km on and with the abuse it's put up with: the only thing to break was the alternator. That's it, €300, plus occasional servicing and a few sets of tires.
6.7L/100km over the last few trips. Slightly noisy over 110kmph, but it goes with the small car territory. I did Dublin - Cork - Dublin on Tuesday, it can handle long trips if needs be. Oh, and as Colm says no timing belt to snap, go to love Toyotas

    +1 on "buy a Yaris".

That green fiesta is a flight model despite having the 1.25 engine. It's not a zetec spec. Flight is basic as Hell as far as I know.

Ghia model like the silver much better, although at this.price level condition is more important. Windey windows are not cool.

Still reckon yaris is a better first car, bulletproof mechanicals, timing chain, 4 star safety rating, cheap tax and insurance
