Jim Glennon presenting Hook show on Newstalk

What's happening in current affairs broadcasting circles?
We have the ubiquituous Jim Glennon in the hot seat presenting the Hook show at t time.
Not only that but he has been presenting a late night show for some guy called Coleman at large.
Let's look at Jim Glennon. He's a former insurance broker from north Dublin; played rugby for Skerries and Ireland ( less than half a dozen caps); won a FF seat in 1997 in Dublin north. So he moved from business to politics. Resigned his seat in 2007.
Since then he has become chairman of one of the largest PR companies in Ireland, Edelman and is now a regular political/business commentator for Newstalk.
He also writes a rugby column for the SINDO.

I just wonder is there a conflict of interest in him doing current affairs work given his political background and his current role as chairman of Edelman?

Ps I enjoy his laid back presentation style and his sense of humour. But if he wants to be a serious full time broadcaster then then he should resign from Edelman.
Pps. who is the coleman at large? Newstalk have an economics corr called Coleman but I've never heard the person being interviewed by Newstalk presenters or journalists for his views on the economy. Is he the guy who writes a column for the Sunday Indo?
If I were DOB I would be seriously examining his input to the various Newstalk radio news programmes and asking why this guy is not providing copy for them. If he refuses to work for them but wants to keep his title of Economics Corr he should he given a sharp shrift kick where the sun dont shine.

.

Great I must tune in :) Some of your background on Jim Glennon is wrong. He was elected to the Dail in 2002 not 1997 and didn't seek re-election in 2007 so I wouldn't say he resigned. He was also coach and manager of Leinster and managed the Ireland Junior teams so he is extremely well qualified for rugby coverage on Newstalk and the Sindo. How many Ireland caps has Hook?

My point is this. How can he present current affairs programmes when he is chairman of one of the biggest PR companies, not just in Ireland, but in the world?
Surely, this is a conflict of interest?
I've no problem with him writing on rugby or appearing in the broadcast media talking rugby.
I do have an issue where he is being handed a radio programme to discuss current affairs issues. How do listeners know whether or not he is promoting particular vested interests on subjects?

Whether Hook played for Ireland or not has nothing to do with my question.

That would be Marc Coleman, Newstalk's economics editor and Sindo columnist.

Well Jim Glennon was connected with FF so that could be one of his vested interests but then this is the same station that has blueshirts like Hook and Yeates dealing with the current affairs of the last government so obviously they have no problem with that.

I've never heard the guy report on any economic issues for the radio station.
I mean Newstalk always get some other economist's view or they ring a newspaper business journalist for their views.
Amazes me how these radio stations get away with providing current affairs coverage on a shoestring.
I've heard Emmet Oliver and Charlie Weston from the Indo on Newstalk shows this week.
So what does Mr Coleman actually do for Newstalk in terms of economics?

Your obviously a Glennon supporter.Re Read my contribution, I said I have no problem with him being a rugby pundit. I do have issues in his role as a radio current affairs presenter and chairman of PR company Edelman's Irish office.

Yeah, I have noticed that. He used to pop up on other programmes when he first came to newstalk, but he is a bit of a difficult character and I suspect this is why he doesn't do it anymore.

Yes I think he is a really good rugby pundit who doesn't take himself too seriously, the only reason I tune in to Hook. You do know you responded to the same post twice?

Have you moved to Ireland recently? He use to be on Hooks show from time to time as the business economics expert. Had his own business show on Newstalk, I think it was at the weekend. Then recently he got involved in politics with his political movement National Alliance late last year. He is currently a candidate for the Senate. He has his Coleman at Large current affairs show which Jim Glennon seems to be covering for him on, are you confusing Hooks show with Colemans show? Colemans show also involves economic matters.

Nepotism.

Heard Hook interviewing Glennon on his show this evening. Old hat. Why Glennon got out of politics. Yawn.
Of course Hook didn't ask him what he is doing for a few bod these days. Like be role at Edelman PR. Now that is a natural question to ask. But Hook conveniently sidestepped that one.

Newstalk are desperately trying to build up Glennon's profile and brand. He was a back bench TD for one Dail session. Nobody outside North Dublin knows who he is. Yet he gets all this free publicity.

Can you imagine RTE news getting Glennon to present the Pat Kenny radio show while Pat is away or the Lunch time news or Drivetime? It would never happen given his chairmanship of Edelman Ireland.

Still don't agree Glennon should be presenting a current affairs programme even if it is temporary cover for the regular guy.

Why didn't they ask Olivia O'Leary to present it? Or Michael O'Reagan.
Seems to me Newstalk is all about 'celebrity' and no substance.

Have you heard John Keogh standing in for Damien ' and we have got loads of texters, Damo' Kiberd.
He's so desperate to make a name for himself that he's being obtuse with all his guests. He interupts them when they are in mid-sentence. Comes across as being aggressive.

And as for Damo Kiberd!! My God, nobody ever called him Damo in the Irish Press or Sunday Business Post.
He is trying to push the brand 'Damo' on listeners in the hope that the Dub working classes will tune in to him as their saviour.
Oh yes loads of texts and tweets coming in. My God, the staff on the show must be getting ready to sue Denis O'Brien for Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) with all the texts and tweets they have to make up!!

As Newstalk purports to be a talkradio why don't they have the public on the show commenting on the subjects under discussion, as they do on BBC Radio 5 Live?

Reason? Newstalk doesn't have a big enough audience.

And as for those ego maniacs presenting the nightly sports programme the less said the better. The little guy who interviews Giles on a Thursday evening sounds like a star-struck teenage kid meeting a legend in Giles.
Why doesn't he ask Giles some decent, straight questions?
Like ask Giles why the Shamrock Rovers project failed in the 70s? How much did he earn at Man U, Leeds and West Brom?
Does he agree with his reputation as being the tough guy at Leeds?

How many premier league games does Giles go to watch when in England ?
What does he know about modern coaching methods? He always slags off current tactics and reverts to when he played which was over 30 years ago.

Will someone tell the little fella ask a straight question in as few words as possible. The programme is not about him but the guests. You don't have to make comments when forming a question. Just ask the question. Nobody cares about your knowledge of the sport.

Why not tune to a new channel? In defence of St Giles he has mentioned his wages at Leeds in comparsion to players of today in the past on the Sports Shows, maybe you just haven't listened long enough to the show. And Eamo D on RTE does a fair bit of grovelling to Giles so not confined to Newstalk. Giles lives in the UK most of the time so he may get to see a few premier league games.

Most local radio stations in Ireland have phone in shows so no reason to prevent Newstalk trying that format if they want to, 5 live only really do phone ins on the morning show for an hour on a selected subject of the shows choice, they had that format years and the Livesey latenight show has phone in contributors on subjects on the show plus the Football phone in after the matches they cover. Newstalk does/did have a sports phone in on the weekends with the fellow from Cork.

Jeebus, just catching Glennon sitting in for Hookie again, amateur hour, totally out of his depth. What were they thinking?

Glennon has to be the worst presenter Ive ever heard. Ive been listening to Newstalk since 7am this morning but had to turn it off when he came on. Embarrassing!
