    Hey motor folks,

I'm looking at 00/01 Almeras, someone said to me that they have a timing chain instead of belt and it doesn't need changing, is this correct?

Timing chain alrite, only problem i know with them is they can stretch over time, especially if the car hasn't been minded and hammered for for most of its life.

i'd be wary of it alright, but i wouldn't let it put me off buying one.

Just be aware that pre 2003 models (mainly) have a lot of issues with their timing chains and headlights. Make sure it has a service history, and see what additional work has been carried out on it.

headlight issues are only on the post 2003 models.

Gearboxes can be dodgy too so check well. Ditto on the timing chains. Just listen after start up. It should take a couple of seconds for oil to reach it but if it is still "rattling" after 10 seconds it could be stretched.

The fact that the Almera has a timing chain is in my opionion a huge plus. The costs of replacing these belts and usually the water pump at the same time is very expensive. Similarily if the belt snaps it can cost a fortune. There is an almera in our household as a second car for twelve years and it has had absolutely no problems.:D

its the second thing on my search criteria when i'm car shopping

    1 - Japanese
    2- Chain driven

if you can match those criteria, you know everything else will look after itself.

    :D

That would be the old 95-00 model though which is a far better car..

Is it late N15 or early N16 you are looking at. The N15's are the utterly bullet proof ones with no chains issues, the N16's can suffer some issues.
