How to sync and remove deleted songs from iphone

I have an iphone 4 / itunes 10 and whenever I sync even songs that I have deleted on itunes are still on my phone. Makes it hard to keep free space. I've searched the net and online help but most pages are about not deleting stuff when syncing. Also tried itunes settings but nothing there I can see. Anyone know how to do…

Have you tried, for example, checking the 'sync only checked songs' option and uncheck ALL songs on iTunes and see if it keeps some songs on the iPhone? Then reverse steps afterwards.
