Did you test him for BVD as it sounds like that why he not thriving or is low in minerals. I had a heifer that was positive for BVD 2 yrs ago ate like a trooper to but never put on weight.

did you buy the bull and is he purebred registered if so he should have got vaccine for bvd.a man i help with suckers and kept a charolais bull and told me the charolais find our weather colder than france and you can get a injection from the vet.i dont no but thats what he told me he kept charolais bull along time.sometimes two charolais bulls a year.

Its quite common for young bulls to lose a lot of weight when they are let run with heifers and cows for the first year.
When did you buy him? Was he well fed? Is he running with cows now? If so, how many? was he getting meal before you bought him? Is he getting any now?

Some young bulls are very eager. They will follow cows or heifers day and night around a field and are bound to lose condition. Is he showing any other signs of sickness?

That theory about temperature in Ireland being a problem for charloais cattle is nonsense. Temoeratures in both winter and summer in the Charolais region of France are quite similar to Ireland. I used to travel a lot in that region for a job I used to have. Just like home, with much less rain.

I'd say that bull, might well have been over done with meal, and is not adjusting well to a lesser diet possibly as well as perhaps being to eager with bulling cows.

When you buy a bull, all too often you are buying one which has had bull ration in a trough in front of him 24 / 7. Bring him home, put home with a bunch cows, have trouble feeding , meal to him when the cows are around you, so you give up after a few weeks. Bull will look like a holstein cow in a month:mad:

I don't buy the theory on weather either.
I have never seen any of the Charolais bulls at home care about the weather. Indeed our current one is outwintered and was in great form even in the very cold weather when it went down to -17*C.

If the OP has a read through the posts so far and answers all the questions being asked, we will build up a better picture of the situation!

BVD looks like the one complaint. we feel he was over feed on meal to pump him up. he has abut 20 cows to do. i was wondering would a pull muscle if bulling another cow come against him

Was he tight gutted when you bought him?
If he was on a high concentrate diet before you bought him, the gut never really expands like it would if on grass / silage diet. He will struggle then to take in the same amount of energy from silage alone.

Are you feeding him any meal at the moment?
Even 2kgs a day would do him good.

If he had meal 24/7 and you redused meal too quick you will have serious feet problems in a couple of months
    consult vet
