Try this for a start, not "proper" HDR, but give the trial a go and see what you think.

strange that it is so slow...

I use a package called qtpfsgui.exe. I didn't make that up. It's cheap, it's nasty, in fact it was free. I think I downloaded it from a website, Luminance I think. On the positive, its free and can give interesting results. on the negative, it can be difficult to use, cos it has alt of settings but no instructions.

I am using photomatix as well. Great piece of software for HDR. Any software is hoing to be a bit slow when processing multiple images, especially if they are RAW format.

Here is a link to do it in LR3 with Enfuse plugin as suggested above by @nilhg

More than enough. I am using a quad core with 2gb ram and it takes about 30-40 seconds to merge 3 photos.

On occasions when it's needed I use Photoshop and combine images manually.

it takes this time or perhaps longer , i am using RAW files from a 5dii - I notice when i use JPEG as the final output it does it quicker, before I was using TIFF ...

How come in Photomatix when I have merged the 3 pics and have a load of HDR style images I can only export (to LR) one of them ?

Then if i wanna export another I have to go through the re merge crap all over again ....
