Can someone explain to me if the iPod touch is just an iPhone without the ability to make calls?

I'm trying to strike a deal with a son who wants an iPhone.

    Thanks in advance

To me there are really only three big disadvantages:

The iPod Touch requires you to be connected to a Wifi network to use data, so you can'y use apps that require it out and about on its own.

The iPod also doesn't have a GPS chip, so apps that use or require location data won't work quite as well.

The cameras on the iPod Touch are of a lower quality.

Others may have more to say though.

Split the difference; buy him a 2nd hand 3GS on Adverts.ie for less than the price of a new iPod.

Pretty much, iPod touches also can't use mobile GPRS/3G data networks so it can only use the internet over wifi, nor do the have GPS so no use of location based services.

When I first bought my IPhone 3gs. I remember bringing it home and being all excited. Loaded it all up. And low and behold it was the exact same as my Ipod touch just uglier and plasctic looking. Compared to the Ipod touch. It was a bit of an anti climax.

Love it now though. The iPhone really comes into it's own when out and about.
