I'm thrilled to announce that the first European Sama Sama (which means Family Gathering) will take place this August in Warwick England. This will be a full Sama Sama, with a Hidden Agenda on Friday night August 5th, with Sama Sama itself taking place Sat/Sun/Mon August 6/7/8.

There will then be a 505 Camp from Tuesday to Friday inclusive and then Sat/Sun will be an Instructors weekend. For anyone with an interest in FMA, any kind of weaponary or self protection I highly recommend all/some of the training as it will also afford the opportunity to train topics not normally afforded in an indoor setting along with top class instruction from a huge variety of Sayoc Instructors. Just to whet the appetite:

Yep Harry, can't wait for this, especially with it been the first one in Europe and having Hidden Agenda with Tuhon Carl on Friday night makes it even better. Just pissed that I can't make US Sama Sama this year first time since 2005 due to the FECKING financial situation here!!!

Just back from an unbelievable 10 days training in Warwick with some incredible instructors in the Sayoc and Atienza systems.

Hidden Agenda on Friday night was an introduction to both Filipino Combatatives with Tuhon Felix Cortez and Atienza Kali with Tuhon Carl Atienza. Training began at 7pm and we finished up around midnight with lots of material for everyone from first timers to guys who have training in either system.

Sama Sama proper started at 10am Saturday morning with tonnes of material from the system covered and tightened up along with competency tests for current instructors and new apprentices. These included dexterity tests, quick draws from the sheath which had to be under .40secs and material familiarity.

Sunday covered 10 different levels of 6 count passing drill with each level emphasising a different skill attribute. We worked on how to load a partner during confrontation and moving into projectiles from loading. After the break we moved into melee's which are meant to represent both tribal wars and mass attack scenarios. We then moved into single blade simulator event which was won by Guro Josh Votaw from Atienza Kali. After a dinner break we were back about 9pm for the first Sayaw to be held in Europe which was a thoroughly inspiring time for a lot of European students who have never been to the States.

Monday was working a lot more system material including templates, drills and knife v knife drills with an emphasis on teaching points for instructors.

Camp 505 started Tuesday with Filipino Combatatives:

    http://www.filipinocombatives.com/

Tuhon Felix worked a whole mix of material from his basic 12 stick template and how to apply the actual template to fighting incorporating stick, knife and sparring. Everyone had the opportunity to spar with him and this was one of the best experiences I had that day. Tuhon Felix has an infectious enthusiasm that comes across in his teaching with an huge energy.

Wednesday was Tuhon Carl's day for Atienza Kali www.atienzakali.com and this was the widely anticipated from particularly those who attended the Hidden Agenda on Friday night. Once again we started with basic sword drills using both the AK blade and Bolo with a lot of dexterity drills before moving on to one of the AK specialities - Mass Attack. (This one was particularly relevant with the riots going just 14 miles away in Birmingham). We worked in various types of scenarios and ended up with lots of sparring with padded sticks. After the dinner break, it was more Mass Attack and sparring from 9pm-1am.

Thursday was Sayoc Kali Europe's rep, Guro Krishna's turn to shine.

    www.warriorseskrima.com

Guro Krishna worked on angles in striking and disarming stick during combat. I had to leave this session early to do some tasks but the material covered during the time I was training was great. Pamana Tuhon Sayoc took the afternoon session and we worked in depth on Receiver Grips until the dinner break. Training resumed after with more work to finish the drill and then we moved onto what Tuhon Sayoc calls parlour tricks which he can pull off with the greatest of ease.

Friday's camp was taken by Pamana Tuhon Sayoc again and we began with the basic material which we all thought we had a deep understanding of but when Tuhon Sayoc started showing us how it should be done, we felt we had the ability of a butcher rather than a fine surgeon. We were given great insights in how to perform basic drills in a much more refined way and better skill/competency level.

Saturday and Sunday were the Instructors weekend and only for Sayoc Instructors.

Hi dave, thanks for updating us with the details of your holiday. Can you elaborate on how the dexterity tests were measured i.e. how you recorded the time taken to unsheath? Were they electronic devices in the holders?

Would have liked to have seen this, really impressed with how he integrates hand and lead switches in his sparring

Yea Ush, it was great and sparring him is unreal. Just as you think you've an entry and you've got him, blam he nails you:p. And he's one fit man, sparred everyone and was still flying it with the last person.
