Make sure its not a tarted up 100hp model, verify service history, see if its on any owners clubs and get an idea of what kind of life its had.

Do a history check. These are often driven beyond their limits.
Treat anything with huge wheels or silly suspension with suspicion and get a 3rd party who knows their vws to have a look.

Check turbo , smoke and clutch and the sticker in the boot for the actual power - dont go by the badge.
They are know for camshaft wear also. Id go for a 130 myself.

Right what I was told about the car was that the clutch was slipping but it was chipped and the chip was removed the wheels and suspension havent looked to be touched but other then that it looks to be a geniune enough car.

Are you buying it off a young lad with a peaked cap?

Without hugely generalizing the chances are that the arse has been driven out of it if it was owned by a young lad, who chipped it (the the sake of probably 10 bph in a TDI :pac:)

Oh would you look at that I did hugely generalize!

they chip up to 190 afaik

Dunno havent actually rang about the car yet was told about it but cant get to see it till saturday cos of college I wouldnt mind if it was mapped but my fear would be the chip has the turbo ****ed.

Well it's going to need a new clutch if it's slipping already, so factor that into the price before you buy.

Lets not go down the road of mocking the power of the GTTDi. And saying a tdi will only gain 10bhp when it's chipped is pretty clueless. A chipped 150bhp tdi is pretty "real world" fast. It won't set the world alight but it's not slow either.

Find out who mapped it - either joe@chippedire or martin@autoremap and its a decent job. A decent map shouldnt wreck the turbo but will but it under a wee bit more stress - if the car is blowing blue smoke or the turbo is making a loud whine its had it - you can also check for excess(pools) of oil in the intake pipes.

As mentioned a remap will bring it up to ~200 hp so not to be sneezed at - even if its a oil burner.

    It wasnt remapped was chipped

Its very rare to chip a car these days ( ie. take out the physical ecu chip and replace it). Most cars will have the ecu software updated via the odb port. People sometimes still say the car has been chipped, when its actually been remapped.

If it has been chipped, you cant reverse it easily and I would avoid tbh.

    but they can be chipped?

Well I suppose they could be. I dont know anyone that provides the service. You would need to resort to chipping for an older car but for anything 2000+ it would be alot of extra trouble when you can just connect up a laptop and remap.
Any services offering chipping/re-chipping usually just mean remapping.

If you ask the guy selling it where he got it done, it would give you an idea.

Maybe it had a plug in tuning box that was removed. In the early days this was wrongly called chipping by the uneducated :D

I have one for 3 and a half years.

Check for noises while idleing, can be a sign of impending dual mass flywheel.

Window regulators give trouble in these, esp when operated by morons in the icey weather.

I have read that the climate control motors can give bother, they are cheap but a bitch to do.

I did the flywheel, clutch timing belt and water pump in mine at 100k just to be safe, was 700 in parts luckily I can do the labour myself.

The only other real problem was intercooler pipes. I had to buy 2 rubber ones and the 'pancake' pipe which was dear enough.

Saying that I love the car, it has a bit of poke (hush ye bastards!) and on a recent run from Sligo-Malin-Belfast-Malin (by the Torr Road, a must do)-Sligo on a tank and that was 540 miles. Thats 54 MPG

Get one with the leather interior it is very comfortable and easy cleaned!

As well as the sticker in the boot it should have extra holes in the front splitter and only the 150's have a front mounted intercooler

On a fifty litre tank its 49mpg, on a 70 litre tank it's 35 etc.

Well it took 45 litres to fill it to the brim when I got back having filled it before I left. ;)

I think you need to read up on the difference between remapping and chipping,i'll put money on it having had a cheap ebay tuning box

Indeed, sometimes modified is a bad thing!

Its not climate control motors that give trouble but the control module for the fans, its a a common problem on all MK4 cars of the era with climatronic.

OP do you have a link to the car in question ?

Here's the thing to check for:
    1. Clutch slippage (also make sure the clutch returns fully, these have issues with the slave and master cylinders often)
    2. DMF/Clutch release bearing (a knocking noise that stops when the clutch is pressed)
    3. Turbo whine
    4. Loose intercooler pipes (the clips on the pipes are terrible, so people often put self taping screws in to secure the pipes)
    5. Normal Suspension stuff: Top shock mounts, Drop links, etc.
    6. Window regulators
    7. Check the water pipes behind the door which runs water from the sunroof. These often get blocked and leads to water leakage inside the cabin

With the current price of fuel, I love my golf. Plenty of real-world power returning ~55MPG

I'd also consider the fact that the handling on MIV Golfs is pretty appalling. That's a serious negative. And I hate to be see blowing a load of black smoke out the back when I'm flooring it...it's just not cool and makes it look like you're trying way too hard.
