Topshop gone down hill?

I agree! Those items you just posted are hidious, I don't see how they are fashionable by any stretch of the imagination!!

I used to love heading into Topshop to pick up a nice little playsuit or dress for a saturday night, but I feel they have been repeating a lot of the same stuff recently. I've been seeing the same flowery dresses in there already this year, and overpriced too! I'm not sure where I will go if this trend keeps us :(

I know, being on a budget myself it used to be my first port of call when I was shopping for a night out but there clothes have just gone so unflattering. Also, it used to be great for getting every day basics but those have gone up in price too (quality has not though).

The first two items are not Topshop, they're from the boutique and by Marios, so that's the designers' piece and price. The second one is Topshop Unique, a separate line from regular Topshop, that is generally more off-beat and better quality than the standard line.

I haven't been in-store in ages, but I thought there were some nice bits online when I looked! Every Spring is the same for most high street shops - pastels, denim and floral. It does get repetitive though, and sucks that you can't even bloody wear it as it's far too cold still :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭LittleT

@Twee: I guess you're right...it's very much mid-season at the mo in the shops but I'm completely sick of being stuck in my winter gear!! You're right in pointing out that some of the above items are concessions in Topshop and can be a bit edgier than some of their own line stuff. I still feel the choice in Toppers is not as good anymore. Where else can we go now? I had high hopes for Forever 21, but IMO, the quality of stuff in there makes Japan look like BTs :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

The prices have gone up but the quality has come down imo.

Oddly, Miss Selfridge has had brilliant stuff in lately, as has Dorothy Perkins. Topshop used to be the strongest member of the group (and I assume it still pulls in the most money) but DP has been ace for the past few months!

I agree, Miss Selfridge has definitly improved, both in price an qualitly. In the last couple of years Ive bought some good quality dresses and coats. It used to be a very "young" shop but now it seems to be catering to late teens-20's :)

I agree on the prices they charge.

    http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&productId=1922842&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=230160&parent_categoryId=203984&pageSize=20&refinements=category~[226998|230160]&noOfRefinements=1

^^ This top in particular is priced at £10, in Dunnes Stores they have similar tops for €5.

According to todays (PayPal) exchange rate £10 is €11.65 and then the postage is an extra £4, so in total is £14 which works out at €16.31.

I don't know how anyone can justify paying €16 for a plain top, when you can get them for little or nothing in other stores.

I was in Penneys on O'Connell St yesterday and they have some gorgeous stuff in, far nicer than what's in Topshop. OK, so the quality of Penneys stuff isn't the same as Topshops, but Topshops quality isn't much better than Penneys, and it's also double the price.

    Sorry for the ramble:o

Yeah I used to go in there to buy stuff that would last me ages, like vests, jeans etc, due to the good quality of the material they use, but the last time I went in there (and the reason it was the last time I went in) the vests were like 9 euro and the jeans, no matter what size, seem geared toward unrealistic body shapes. That didn't completely deter me, and I figured "oh well", but on looking around more, none of their other clothes seemed nice at all, kind of all geared towards people who can pull off anything. Which isn't me. Haven't been back since.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 521 ✭✭✭alexa5x5

Oh and they are a major offender when it comes to ruining pretty dresses/tops with big manky black zips

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,158 ✭✭✭Tayla

To be honest I was never mad about Topshop stuff really, I often go through the whole website and find nothing I like, I tend to buy black trousers from them and some of the brand 'rock rebels' stuff and that's about it.

Totally agree Topshop quality and prices don't match and it was one of the few shops that didn't bring down their sterling exchange rate while others did. The quality is v poor. I got a black jumpsuit in the sale for 45 euro about 8 months ago its gone completely out of shape. I went in a few weeks ago and the exact same one is back in at 75 you could get very similar JS in penny's for 20 or less! Zara's new season stuff is AMAZING I went in last week and could of bought everything I saw and that rarely happens me. There plain tee's and vests are good quality and cheap better than dunnes as they don't go out of shape.
    I swear I don't work for Zara:)

I think Topshop clothing is poor in general can be very cheap looking and after a few wears looks terrible. Their stock is lacking design and structure much prefer Dorothy Perkins, Also noticed Miss Selfridges has gone down a little very recently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭Chuchoter

I honestly don't know who Topshops market is actually supposed to be, all their styles are so trend based (or ridiculous and ugly, at times) it seems as if they are aimed at teens/early 20s, but there is nothing less than 40 euro in that entire shop, even crappy tshirts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 697 ✭✭✭chocgirl

It was always my favourite shop too but in the last couple of months I haven't really spotted anything that I like. I thought it was just because I was getting old though:( I do think their basics are much better than Dunnes and certainly penneys though and still pick up little cardigans and that kind of stuff. It's the trend driven stuff that turns me away though, it can't be flattering on many people. Plus they seem to have no staff, well none on the tills anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 330 ✭✭Lorrrrraine

I think the most disgusting thing is the attitude of the staf, to be honest. It's really turned me off going in there. Also, I've found that the clothes seem to be cut for girls with smaller than average boobs or just boyish figures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭fillefatale

I haven't bought from Topshop since last summer and that was sale stuff. Their clothes are grossly overpriced, but they're catering for a certain trend at the moment so it must be bringing in the bucks or else they wouldn't keep selling it. The sleeveless blouses they're selling right now... I got a similar Monsoon one in a charity shop for £4!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭LittleT

Yeah the wearability of some of their stuff lately is pretty poor...it seems to me that unless you wear some of the pieces the way the staff do, i.e. about seven different layers all put together carefully in an attempt to look "undone and edgy" then the individual pieces look ridiculous!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,158 ✭✭✭Tayla

I have bought one top in Topshop in the last couple of years. Who actually can pull off their clothes? Not 5 ft 1", size 14 me anyway :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 57 ✭✭PocketWatch

I agree with pretty much everything thats been said, their prices are ridiculously high and honestly their whole clothing range is aimed at skinny 5ft10+ girls with small boobs. Very few people can pull off the majority of their clothes which is a shame cause I have seen a few lovely things in there but I just can't afford their sky high prices and the quality is pretty awful as well!

There's just no way they can justify selling a top for €50 when it will last less than a year!

    +1.

I am a 30B (but) and 5ft 5 (and a half :pac:) and find a lot of their tunics are too long on me.

I find the problem with things being too long for me with most stores though, not just Topshop.:(

That's funny cos i'm 5ft 7 (and a half) but I find nearly everything is too short for me.....most mini dresses are out of the question as they don't even cover my bum!! It all depends on our proportions, it's just very annoying because if something is too long it's easy enough to fix but when it's too short then there's not a lot you can do:mad:

I have te nightmare of finding stuff to short for me as well, don't get me wrong, not everything is too long, but for example this tunic

    http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&productId=1951032&langId=-1&categoryId=&searchTerm=wavy%20detail%20tunic&pageSize=20

It comes to just above my knee, but it's still too long, I'd wear it with leggings, but with it being so long (on me anyway) and with wearing leggings, it would look silly on me :( It's low-cut as well and with small boobs, it doesn't look right (imo). But then, I'm very self-conscious, so it could just be over-analyzing lol.:o

I want to get it in cream ( http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&productId=2256190&langId=-1&categoryId=&searchTerm=wavy%20detail%20tunic&pageSize=20 ) but don't know if it'd fit me, I couldn't find it in Arnotts or Clearys, might look again, see if I've any luck.

Sorry Purple_bobbin, I reread what I wrote and I didn't mean it to sound like 'oh it's worse for me' so never mind the tone of the message :)

I knew I recognised that cream tunic and it was because my friend had it on in some pics, just checked out her facebook page there and she had posted the pics last November so it might be hard to find it in the shops unfortunately :(

Haha it didn't come across like that.:)

:( hopefully somewhere will have it, if not, I guess I'll order both the 8 and 10 and see which fits better. I need the 10 to fit the hips, but it'll be too big on top, but the 8 would fit on top, but be too small on the hips, argh!

Thanks for your help with the tunic, I appreciate it :)

I bought it in navy in Edinburgh last week and I was in the store in Liffey Valley, Dublin at the weekend and they had a couple in all of the colours available so I'd imagine they'd still have it in most of the stores.

Ah that's good, she might find it then.

Another thing about topshop is the mini range (for babies)
It's been out now for a couple of years and it's still terrible, really boring....
I would have love to get my little girl some lovely little coordinating outfits but nope (yes I really am that sad :) )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,595 ✭✭✭The Lovely Muffin

Cheers guy, Topshop in Jervis St had them :D

The 8 is perfect on me, first time a size 8 has never been too tight on me :D

Anyway, the Black and red tunics are also in Bershka, and Bershka have it in a royal blue as well, in Bershka they are priced at €19.99, in Topshop they are €27

I shall be popping into Bershka next week...:D

I have to say though, the attitude of some of the Topshop staff (today anyway) was awful.

I found the opposite, I think they are too big in that area! I have a boyish figure but I'm quite tall, so I can't imagine how the smaller sizes fit small skinny people.

If you ask me, Topshop has always been fairly hit-or-miss, mostly miss. While I could on occasion find something wearable out of the huge amount of wannabe-catwalk weird stuff, it usually came with an unjustifiable price tag. I have to echo what another poster said about the jeans- no matter what size they are, they still seem ridicuously skinny! I just wouldn't go in there ( as a curvy :p size 12) and expect to find jeans that fit , but they always seemed on the small side even when I was a skinny teenager.

In short, Topshop sucks... Forever 21 ftw! :pac:

I love the jeans in Topshop. But only for like 2 weeks. After that they get baggy and out of shape. Very annoying :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭Semele

I used to love them but haven't bought anything in ages. The quality has done down- t-shirt material tops are way too lightweight and clingy and look like a rag after one wash, and dresses are made out of horrible scratchy polyester (I used to think that was just what polyester felt like, but other shops make it look and feel nicer, DP for one!).

What really annoys me though is how "trendy" everything is. Nice fabrics or designs are ruined by the item being massively oversized, bodycon or cropped, something that makes it unflattering or messy looking on anyone but an size six teenager. I went shopping for pretty but casual work clothes the other day and came out with nothing- and most of my favourite items ever in the past, that I wore to death, had been from Topshop. At the risk of sounding ancient, what's wrong with making pretty, fitted, flattering clothing???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,195 ✭✭✭Corruptedmorals

Haven't bought anything there in ages. I have 2 dresses from there, both have shrunk so badly they cannot be worn at all now. My favourite pair of jeans come from there though, they were only €1 because I exchanged a present of a skirt that looked rotten on me. My favourite pair of shoes come from there, 3 years old so that sickening €99 price tag on them has worked out fine. Same price tag on coral platforms I bought in belfast for £53! I do find stuff I like in there, I like their jewellery, some of their bags, their jeans (though the sizes are so messed up in them), their long cardigans, some of their dresses and tops. I can never justify the price anymore, even in the 20% off student days it's still a rip- and this is back when I had a job! I only go in there now to buy that edible paper stuff, YUM! Far too much of their stock is overly hipster, painfully on trend or downright hideous. That said, if I was rich I'd buy a good few items there but I'm not so..I live in Penneys and F21 instead. A good 1/3 or more of my wardrobe now comes from F21, lots of it washed several times. The only thing is my grey leggings from there, they havem't fared well. Everything else- perfect, no complaints. I've a huge variety of stuff from there and all, so I would think that complaints of shocking quality from there are unfounded. Personally I find A-wear's quality horrendous! And those Topshop dresses

Definitely agree with you here, the quality of clothes in A-Wear is terrible. I’m a size 10 in jeans but in there I have to buy a size 8, but after 1 or 2 washes I have to wear a belt to hold them up!

I went off Topshop for the last 2 or 3 years, I just rarely saw anything I liked in there. Over the last 6 months or so I've been liking the stuff in there again though.
They definitely need to put their prices down, some of the prices in there are crazy! And they still really overcharge in Ireland compared to the UK.

I like Topshop though, I find the clothes to be really good quality and I have a lot of things from there that have lasted me 4 years or more of regular wear. Their sizes are generally ok, although I have noticed a bit more vanity sizing recently. I have a problem with their jeans, they're always too tight on my knees and too big on my waist. Considering I've never had that problem anywhere else I'm going to say their jeans are wonky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,150 ✭✭✭LivingDeadGirl

I've never liked their clothes but they do seem to be getting steadily worse. Prices are outrageous also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭Pandoras Twist

Prices have gone up, quality has gone down and wearability has gone out the window.

I know they've always been the more fashion forward of the highstreet brands, but seriously some of the stuff they come out with is just off the wall. Gold sequin covered tartan leggings...sorry what??

Its 'vintage' style then dontcha know... there'll be some leggy fashion blogger sporting this with a pair of hunter wellies and a topknot. I think because its by a 'designer' that they think they can justify the cost and it being festival season. It's totally shapeless! It'll be in the Sale for £50 in a couple of months and sold out for whatever reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,036 ✭✭✭Shelga

Haha, I'm laughing my ass off here at those links, horrendous! :pac: I think Topshop rely on impressionable girls getting caught up in the whole 'feel' of the place- the surly staff (not all of them), overpriced 'cool' clothes and indie hipster music blasting out. But anyone with an ounce of sense would see that items like that mac are daylight robbery!

I completely get that everyone has different taste, and people don't want to look the same as everyone else, but you can have flattering, tasteful clothes that show your personality and don't cost a week's wages. I think Dorothy Perkins is the best high street store for this at the moment, have been buying the most from them anyway. Well, the website. Although was in yesterday and they seem to FINALLY have changed the currency discrepancy, so maybe I'll be popping in more often.

Those shorts make no sense to go over a bikini, if the material gets wet it'll be ruined!
