Are people who have defaulted on tax payments to revenue still eligible for social welafare payments ie. social welfare, contributory pension, child benefit etc. ?

I heard an old guy on the radio a few weeks back saying that when he went to claim his pension he was told that he had un-paid taxes from several years previous and would have to pay the tax, interest and penalties before he would ge his pension,

A benefit payment such as JB and IB are based on paid contributions, which you cannot claim without the relevant contributions amount needed. But i would guess you would still be able to apply for payments such as Jobseekers Allowance. The man on the radio was probaly refused because of the fact he didnt have the revelant PRSI paid contributions needed in order to claim his payment.
