Im in a spot of bother at the moment so ill tell you the story so far.

I am in college for a while now, last year i jumped courses from Engineering into Chemistry so ive been in college for a bit.
When in engineering i did more or less 3 years, i was miserable at it. Then when i transferred was put into 2nd year. In 2nd year i only had like 5 classes so when i was paying for the fees i only paid for the reg fee and the price of 5 classes. When i registered for 3rd year i was told all i had to pay was my reg fee, which seemed a little odd looking back at it, but i trusted my college had everything in order.
Roll on 1 month ago, over 2/3 of the year thru my course, my college tells me that they made a mistake and that an error was found in my account and that i was charged incorrectly, and that i owe 4850. Im kinda speechless at the moment because i.............well dont have 4850 euro.
I have a meeting on Friday and i was wondering is there anything i have in my favor to tell the college that what they are doing is wrong? what rights or legal advice can i use in my favor because i think what they are doing is disgraceful.

really looking forward to your replies

I don't really get why though? You waited till 3rd year to drop out of a course, knowing full well (as any student does) that you'd have to pay fees for 3 years of whatever course you changed to. You are only entitled to free fees for one degree.
You changed course, they want their fees. What's the issue?

The fact that it took them this long to update my account, the fact that i had money to offset this fee, the fact that ive already put myself in debt for the summer. pretty **** time if u have to budget your money

Well how about the fact that you knew you were meant to pay fees but instead of holding on to your money for when the college came looking for it, you spent it on whatever?

im not really getting into an argument about this.
upon doing my registration i was sure i had a year in EEA funding, i still do, and i thought that this year would be my last one of funding, im more pissed of that im being asked of this money so sudden, i may not be able to proceed into final year if i dont pay in time.

Realistically you can either go to a solicitor or pay up. Not only can posters on this forum give legal advice, you college probably deals with disputes over fees on a regular basis and wil not be willing to negotiate unless they are contacted by a solicitor. Even then, unless they came to a quick compromise you could spend more money on legal fees than you would paying the tuition fees.
