Noel Gileece and Eamon McGovern advanced to the finals night of the third running of the Boho & Derrygonnelly (BD) Open Darts Championships, after a very competitive night of darts in Doogies Bar , Derrygonnelly , Co.Fermanagh.
Having defeated Joe mcGullion in one of the earlier rounds, he then faced up to James Deery in the quarter finals. In a superb game that went the distance Noel hit a 180,140 with his second and third throw of the leg to set him up for a 14 dart leg which sealed his path to the semi final against Jim Hoy. Jim had earlier played a blinder to defeat the up and coming Aidy Meehan 3-0 in the first round. Noel started from where he had left off in the previous game and won three straight legs to advance to the finals night on May 6th. Eamon McGovern showed the kind of form that took him to the final of eamons piano bar tournament in blacklion earlier in the year with some straight legged victories in the early rounds, Mark McGrath who had earlier beaten John Doogan being one of Eamons victims. This set him up for a semi final against Dessie McKenzie. Again mcGovern was too strong for his opponent and had the luxury of busting his score in the second leg against his disappointing opponent , who was unable to raise his game when it mattered.

McGovern will be aiming to retake his crown of 2009 which was dramatically taken from him in last years nail-biting final by Richard Reid, whilst Noel Gileece will be a match for anybody on finals night on this form.

Many thanks to Margaret and John Doogan for light refreshments on the night and to any players who did not qualify, try again next week. Consolation prize for anyone who enters 3 weeks or more and does not qualify is a chance to win 2 tickets to the world grand prix darts in the city west ,Dublin later on this year

James Deery from Beleek and Sean Higgins (Monea) made the last eight of the third bd open darts tournament after the third heat in The Cosy Bar , Derrygonnelly.

Defeating Dessie McKenzie and the promising youngster Brian Smith 3-0 before overcoming Michael Timoney 3-1 in the game of the night. Sean Higgins , a semi finalist back in 2009 reached the final after defeating Joe Deery 3-2 and Declan Gileece 3-0 before getting the better of former county player John mcGovern 3-2 to book his place.

Highest checkout of the night was 116 from Aidy Meehan.

Michael Timoney and Gordon Burleigh won through to the last eight of the BD Open after a competitive night of action in the Linnet Inn. Timoney was especially impressive as he made the final without dropping a leg on the way. Beating Gaby McBarron , Paul Duffy and John McGovern along the way. Gordon Burleigh found things a bit more tough and in his first round Tom Caughey caused him plenty of problems before Burley edged through 3-1. In the next round Gordon confidence was restored in taking out Defending Champion Richard Reid 3-1 , he then followed with a routine 3-0 win over Aidy Meehan. With Both players through to next Friday nights final the board final was a fine spectacle indeed.

Michael hit finishes of 135 , 103 and 89 to win 3-0 in just 43 darts to complete a perfect night for him , although Gordon lost nothing in defeat and joins his son William in the final night This coming Friday.

Irvinestown's Eamon McGovern won his second BD Open Darts Championship title after a brilliant tournament came to a conclusion in The packed Knockmore Lounge, Derrygonnelly on Friday 6th May.

The Irvinestown thrower defeated Paul Maguire , Michael Timoney and Gordon Burleigh to reclaim the title that he lost so dramatically 12 months ago in the 2010 final to Richard Reid.

    QUARTER FINALS

Gordon Burleigh 4 William Burleigh 0

In the father against son battle in the first game of the night it was dad Gordon who claimed the bragging rights in the Burleigh household with some of his trademark finishing, but credit to Willie for pushing him all the way in what was a difficult enough assignment for the debutant.

Eamon McGovern 4 Paul Maguire 0

In his bid to reclaim his crown McGovern got his scoring going early in this encounter as a slightly nervy Maguire went 2-0 down in double quick time and although he produced a rally in the last 2 legs it was McGovern who produced a 53 finish to make it to the last 4.

Noel Gileece 4 Sean Higgins 1

Local bragging rights were up for grabs here as the 2 parish players faced off against each other for a place in the semis. in what was to be a feature of the night for Noel, his first two throws of the game saw darts landing on the floor for the Boho man, but he produced some tidy finishing to go into a 3 leg lead. sean then rallied and took the 4th with a d8 shot. Sean kicked off the 5th leg with a 100 , 100 , 60 to take a grip on the leg but was unable to reel in Noels lead as a 140 put the Gileece back in control and he wrapped up a 4-1 victory on d8.

Michael Timoney 4 James Deery 3

The closest game of the night pitted together the two Belleek Throwers and it was Michael who gained revenge for an earlier defeat in a heat semi final by getting the better of old friend James by the odd leg in seven. Each of the first 6 legs had went with the throw but it was Michael who broke the darts of James in the decider to claim a semi final spot.

    Semi Finals

Gordon Burleigh 5 Noel Gileece 3

Another close encounter and a frustrating one for Noel who saw four darts end up on the floor through deflections , and a few of them proved costly as Gordon took advantage at the right moments. Key leg here was the 6th as Noel left double tops with Gordon adrift on 178. Noel went underon his d20 attempt and then ended up just inside the corner of the single 15 to leave him 5. Gordon put the pressure on with a 140 and it had the desired effect as Noel missed again and Gordon took out d19 on his first attempt to level up. It gave him the impetus to go on and take the last two legs for the match, despite Noel again missing a d20 to force a deciding leg.

Eamon McGovern 5 Michael Timoney 3

In one of the games of the night, Eamon McGovern progressed to his third final, but not without a fight as Michael Timoney produced some great darts to push his opponent the whole way. In a repeat of last years semi final , both players fired in two maximums each during the contest plus many 140's as the first four legs were shared. Michael missed a crucial double in the fifth to gain a break of throw, McGovern finishing on Double 16. Timoney fought back to level at 3-3 with two 100's and a 140 in the leg. But it was a crucial miss at Double 20 in the seventh that probably cost Michael the match. McGovern stepping in to hit an 82 finish and he took the next leg on Double 8 to qualify for the final for the third year in a row, but great credit to Michael for a great game of darts.

    Final

Eamon McGovern 6 Gordon Burleigh 2
    (1-0 , 1-1 , 2-1 , 2-2 , 3-2 , 4-2 , 5-2 , 6-2)

The final itself followed a similar pattern than the two semis with both players sharing the first few legs as they found their feet and settled any nerves. In the Third leg McGovern took advantage of a miss for the leg by Burleigh to take a lead that he would not relinquish. And despite gordon having a shot at the bull for the leg in the seventh McGovern's nerves were again ice cool as he went out on Double 16 for the two leg cushion he needed. The seventh leg was just brilliant with McGovern hitting 100, 177 , 134 and finishing 90 (20 20 Bull) , (Gordon coming back on 137) and it was the insurance he needed to go on and complete the last leg on D4 to win the Tournament for the second time in three years and take home the £300 prize money. Great credit to Gordon however, the score-line was harsh on him but nonetheless a great spectacle for local darts watchers.

2011 BD Open Darts Champion - Eamon McGovern (Irvinestown) £300

Runner Up - Gordon Burleigh (Swadlinbar) £100

Highest outshot of the tournament - Michael Timoney 135

I would like to thank everyone for participating in this years renewal. Although on one qualifier night we were struggling for numbers there were good turnouts on the other three nights and hopefully the 2012 tournament will see more new faces and an increase in prize money as the first three years have been run on a money in money out basis.
