Is self-esteem directly linked to a proper body-image?

I am not sure if this is the right forum but her I go.

People talk about body-image, your mind's views of yourself. How some people have distorted body images, but is that corrected when you have proper self esteem? I am asking as before when my self-esteem was very low I had a big distortion of what I looked like in my mind.

I have been using technique to raise my self-esteem and have noticed my body-image (or self-image) is being corrected. So is there a link between self-image and self-esteem?

This study found that self-esteem was significantly related to Perceived Body Image Dissatisfaction.

Actual body mass was also found to be significantly related to Perceived Body Image Dissatisfaction but independently of self-esteem. I'm only reading from the abstract here but that would suggest to me that, yes, there is some evidence for someone being more satisfied with their body appearance as their self-esteem rises even though their actual body hasn't changed.

    Hiya Cork,

Yeah I would think that there definitely is a link between your self esteem and self image. Very basically self esteem can be defined as 'how much you like yourself' - if you then combine that with self image 'how do you see yourself' the you can see the connection. If you don't like yourself then you won't see yourself in a positive light and on the flipside, if you like yourself then you are more inclined to see yourself more positively!
