Scrappage question

I am thinking about scrapping my wifes car next month and I have a question that I cannot find the answer to.

Can I remove the lights, engine, gearbox and anything else I want to keep or sell out of it? It will be then sent to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), if the garage will not take it

During my search I found some answers to other interesting questions I had.

Does it need a valid NCT?
No, once the NCT certificate has expired no more than 90 days previously,

or what if it is crashed and immobile?

the car has failed the test in the six months immediately before the date of scrappage) and it has been insured in your name for at least 12 months in the 18 months immediately before the date of scrappage.

Can I keep my old car for a while?

Yes, You may buy a new car and provided the old car is scrapped within 60 days of the date of registration of your new car, you are eligible for the relief.

Can I get scrappage if my car was an import?

Yes, The car must have been registered in Ireland for a minimum of 18 months prior to the date of scrappage

i believe you can take the remains to an authorised scapper yourslef if you wish to get the cert of destruction/....with the agreement of the dealer , id say you could take anything off it.

There was guy over on octane.ie who stripped a lot off his 166 before scrapping it.

In theory afaik there's supposed to be 85% of the car for scrapping. So, gearbox/lights/wheels may be okay.

You may be charged to get it lifted though if not driving unless of course you can get it there yourself.

Yards like Thorntons in Dublin will lift it for free as they have plenty of lifters out there on a parmanent basis.

Don't think you'd get away with whipping the engine out though.

This scrappage scheme is sacrilege. I wince at the thought of what perfectly serviceable cars are making it to an early grave just to fund the Korean auto industry and some fat cat Irish car dealer.

    This again?

If they are perfectly good cars theres nothing stopping you rocking up and buying them for the €1250 or whatever it is VRT rebate.

Of course there is; I don't have 1,250 to buy up every car I see or hear of being put in under the scheme. All I can do is influence the misguided owners.

Just because people have different opinions to you doesnt make them misguided.

There is a major attitude of superiority that hangs around on a few forums on boards. Motors is a major culprit.

If someone wants a new car, whatever their reasons, thats their right.

    Who pissed in your cornflakes?

Peopel constantly whinging about what other peopel do with their money and tellign them how wrong they are.

In fairness i think he was actually talking about the scrapage scheme making it far too easy to destroy perfectly good cars as opposed to telling anyone what to do with their money.

For most people I'd imagine it's just the excuse they wanted to get a new car. If getting a grand off a car is all thats needed to get a new car, they most likely could have afforded it anyway.

    To answer the OP,

Yes you can, however if you strip the car of the valuable bits then the ATF may charge you for disposal of what's left. If the car is largely intact then the ATF is not permitted to charge.

    link1
    link2

Either way, you have to get the car brought to the ATF, they won't (and don't have to) come and collect it for free.

Thanks for reply but that is specifically for scrapping an older car outside of the scrappage scheme.

How much can an ATF charge upto, anyone here work in this area.

Also the only reason we will changing her car is that 800+ a year tax, 30 mpg, and it will need about 2 grand spending on it for NCT. Will be looking to spend no more than 9 grand.

So basically you want to spend nine grand to save two grand.

    How does this make sense?

What kind of car is it? It must be something decent if it's a 2.2. BMW 520i maybe? It may be worth more than the measly 1250 being offered under the scappage scheme.

What is wrong with it that it needs two grand worth of repairs?

Also, the only new cars available for that kind of money are awful little tin can yokes that probably aren't a patch on what you have.

If you want a change for something that is cheaper to run, you're probably better off buying say a 08 car - at least then you'll be able to buy something that is still reasonably comfortable and powerful as well as being able to get rid of what you have.

I always wanted one of those.

It must hurt like hell paying 1,600 tax a year. When I lived in UK they were around 100 quid a year to tax.

I know but there comes a time in our lives when common sense gets the better of us.

It hurts like hell - especially since I put in about 4k miles per year total (and I have 2 other old large engine motors).

However, it puts a big grin on my face. Lovely bus to drive.

The cheapest diesel Clio (which presumably you're talking about given that you say 104 tax) is €15,990 so 14,740 with scrappage.

So already you're talking about spending 15 grand to save two grand.

I'd wager that whatever you have is far nicer than any French econobox.

Also, diesel engines hate being driven around town constantly, so it won't be long before the two grand in savings becomes nothing because of the DPF (900 to replace one of these) and the DMF (over a grand to replace one of those), diesel engines irrespective of make can be moneypits, especially for town drivers.

    .

The retail on the 1.2 that they are selling for €8990 is €13390. Renault add other discounts on top of government scrappage.

    Clio doesnt have a DPF

You also dont know the OP's driving habits. (Either do I , which is why I'm not assuming anything)
