    Hi all,

Been some noise coming from the car with a while or so, got the mechanic to give it a drive to see, and within 400 meters he is telling me the gearbox is funked, can they tell that quick with out even putting on the ramps ?

Im looking at a nasty bill of 1700inc Vat fitted

Any advise for me on this one, questions i should be asking the garage (or myself :)) to why this has happened only after 59,000 miles

Its also a possibility a new clutch will be needed im guessing

While the box is out it makes sense to do the clutch too if there is any wear on it.

Are they sure it's the gearbox? What sort of noise was it, a sort of rumbling or a knocking?

With something that expensive, I'd advise getting a second opinion and quote.

The DMF(dual mass flywheel) would be a vastly more common failure on your car then the gearbox.

ya it was more of a rumbling noise than a knocking, almost like a wearing/rubbing sound, and it seemed to vanish when i engaged the clutch

Never found the gears to be hard to change either, which i though maybe would be the first tell tell sign

I agree, however the garage has been recommended by a few friends of mine and have been getting it serviced with them of over a year now with no issues

Sounds like the DMF or the release bearing to me. Both bearings would go quiet when you press the clutch, taking the pressure off them.

Jezz i'd be much happier if it was, tho the guy reckons its the box, suppose he will have to take it out to see anyways, im just a little worried now that they say its the box and the clutch even tho it may only be a clutch fault

+1 on the DMF. I will eat my shirt if its the box. Get another mechanic op.

You need to get a second opinion on this one. Hard to tell without driving car and hearing noise.

It really could be ur gearbox, I've an a3 too 08 and mine went in January, couldn't believe it, had rubbing noise for about a week then gave up on motorway, noise got worse and suddenly gears got hard to change, had to get towed. It's very expensive when uv the parts, vat and labour, especially sickening when ur just out of warranty!! Get on to Audi Ireland urself, after a week of negotiation they paid towards mine And got main Audi in Germany on board too and they contributed too. There's a goodwill payment available, the garage won't tell u about it uv to follow it up urself but it's worth it. U can get reconditioned gearboxes too for cheaper but Audi won't contribute to that

Another vote for the DMF. You can get a clutch, release bearing and DMF done for around €1200 at a main dealer a bit less if you go independent or up north.

Is it possible he's trying to dumb down the flywheel and calling it part of the gearbox or something?!

are these all 6-speed boxes? Main bearing went in my one in my old passat @ 64k.
    Sickner.

Just based on that I'd be thinking it's the gearbox. You need a 2nd opinion though as said, internet diagnosis is impossible :) Let us know though.

Really appreciate all the input guys, thanks

Going to get a second opinion in the morning, it makes sense now to do so

Will report back tomorrow eve with hopefully a final less expensive diagnosis

    where are you located ?
If you are in the Dublin area, give Walkinstown Clutch and Gearbox a call.
(sorry dont have their number to hand, google them. Thats where I found them)
Quoted me happy, friendly, great customer service and done a great job.

So dropped it in to another mechanic this morn, and same diagnosis, box is kaput

In one way i feel better that the garage did'nt try to shaft me (excuse the pun)
so it looks like they will recondition the parts that are funked, ive yet to hear back what exactly was causing all the damage diff's etc and if they think the DMF will need to be changed aswell

Im down south by the way
