our company carried these out every year and the results of the appraisal resulted on your salary increase etc

However given that there is no chance of gettin salary increses this year is there much point progressing with this?

It "shouldn't" just be about a process for payrises.. It should be used to look at performance over the year, and identify areas for improvement, and strengths which should continue, to help the employee develop.

In the current environment it's probably even more important that a company gets the best from it's employees as their competitors will be trying to... A higher performing company will stand a better chance of re-implementing payrises in the future than a company which continues to struggle.
