Can customs seize an english reg vintage car on the road, that has been to the nct/vro for assessment, but is awaiting issue of the vehicle registration document.

    Thanks

Customs can do what ever they please, nearly. They have incredible legal power, much more than the Gardaí. Customs don't need a warrant, and can stop and seize anything.

But if you have a receipt from the NCT/VRT office then you should be ok, so long as its within a reasonable period. Politeness and good manners can go a long way.

    Shouldn't.

I got pulled in a UK car with no disks whatsoever in the window.

I showed the guard the insurance cert, the form stamped by revenue and my licence and that was it. Told him I was waiting on process and he said fine.

The customs should be just the same. As long as you are not taking the mickey, you should be fine.

The car was in for its nct inspection only last week, and I,ve been told that it will take 7-10 days to get it finalised by revenue. So its all genuine.

the situation re vrt seems to be one on which classic car people can have an arguement, despite the fact that they /we are generally nice people.

i doubt very much that the customs have EVER seized a classic car(on which the VRT due is very little).

I doubt very much that the customs have even bothered to stop and ask the driver of a classic car about it.

customs have the power to seize your car from a locked garage if they feel like it. Even if it's not on the road or has no wheels they can still take it. The police don't care once you've got discs in the window but customs are a different story.

I'd have to say you' be very unlucky if they did....think they'd be more interested in modern yellow plates tbh...but yes they can seize amything they're suspicious of...

Sorry if my post is confusing , so I,ll clarify it for you.

I have just recently bought a car with an english reg, in the last couple of days. It has been to the NCT/VRO centre last week, and its in the process of getting new irish plates. I have been told that the nct will ring me when they receive the cert from the revenue, and then I call in to the nct, pay my 50 euro and get my new reg.

I,d like to know, now that I have had the nct inspection, and filled in all the paper work, can I drive my car on the road with the current english plates, until I get my new ones. My car has not been siezed, and I have not been approached by anyone about it. It is insured by an irish company

Hope this makes the position clearer

It is illegal for an Irish resident to drive a foreign registered car here.

As others said, if you have the documents with you that you're waiting for the NCT to finalise the paperwork, it's unlikely the Gardai / customs will do you for something, but technically they could

If it were me, I'd wait a few days until all is in order...
