Mobile Speed Camera vans

Firstly, feel free to move if this is in the incorrect section.
Anyway, today i went passed a white mobile speed camera van, It was parked on the opposite end of the road and it was facing me, I must admit i was doing close to 90 in an 80 zone.
About 2 hours later, on my homeward journey the van was in the same place, I had learned my lesson and was driving within the speed limit. I noticed that the van was in darkness, it was lighting up time and there did not seem to be anyone in the van.
    My questions are
    1. Will i still receive penalty points if there was no one in the van.
    2. Is the camera facing from the front or back of the van.
    3. How long should it take me to receive the letter in the post.

The camera is at the rear of the van. Did it flash when you passed the first time?

The camera operator/driver was probably in the rear of the van and thats why you didn't see anyone.

I didnt notice any flash either time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

the gosafe van has an infra red flash.. not visible to the naked eye

the camera looks out the rear window, but can catch cars traveling towards and away at the same time

close to 90 in an 80 zone...you probably werent over the 80 as speedos are usually around 10% out...dont worry til the ticket comes, it might well not.

IMO if you they nail you for doing near 90 itll be a bit harsh.

I was always under the impression that the speed camera van could not get you from the opposite side of road. Not sure how true it is though.

    I was caught at 67km/h in a 60.

    It is harsh. Very.

    Can anyone confirm that
a- there is only a camera in the back
b- they can not get you from the oposite side of the road

Camera is in the back and you can be caught on the opposite side of the road depending on the positioning and angle.

I hope OP that you dont mind if I post a small question here also relating to these speed vans...do they only operate when stationary or can they track your speed if your driving along side them/ overtaking them...

Was on the M50 today and passed one in the lane beside me..checked my speed and I was doing about 110...

Passed one this morning and was doing 70 in a 60. Luckily enough was well able to slow down before getting anywhere near it/back of it.

Was twice going at just a smidgeon over 110 km/h in a 100 km/h zone as I passed the speed camera. Heard nothing back, so if the Op was less than 10 km/h over as per speedo he might be OK.
Also, the camera does look out the back, so if the back was facing the other way I suppose the operator was just having a good snooze paid for by us. (well not me so far):)

How would they when the operator is driving the van unless he was a really good multitasker..:p

I am still shocked that they can catch you when you are driving in the opposite direction that the van is facing..

    I like their job.
Park up, sit in chair, watch screen. And with blacked out windows, sure enough time for a snooze.
Sounds like not too punishing work to me.
    Where do I apply?:D

I just were thinking about practical reason for stat of these vans. What is the reason they on road ?? Collect money from people who slightly drive faster, and punish them for that, or prevent people for really high speed, and deaths on road. ????? I think that they were made for prevent people die on roads. ... next conclusion: when most people die on roads ??? 1am ?? 3 am ?? 5 am? I think vans should be operating in times, when most tragic accidents happening on roads, not in time when traffic builds up.

Just to clear this up ...( correct me if I'm wrong)

If you are breaking the speed limit, and notice one of these vans a couple hundred metres ahead of you, parked with the front windscreen facing you, yeah, it's possible to get done, but not until you actually pass the van, while still breaking the speed limit..as it's only now you are in view of the camera..so, so have plenty of time to slow down when/if you spot the van, unlike if you were approaching from the opposite direction.

girlfrien got letter last day, doing 62 kph in a 60 kph zone, 80 euro fine and two points on license...

harsh is not the word.. fine for anything under ten kph over the limit i think would be fair, and fine and points for anything over ten kph of the limit would seem fairer also..

You must have misread the letter, scan it in and post it up for us; because like a picture of the Loch Ness monster or Big Foot we hear a lot about them but they always turn out to be fake.

2 questions to add to this:

Does the camera need to flash for you to be caught?
(I passed one at Well's in Gorey - they were hiding in the ditch - I was doing 85 in that 80 km zone but it did not flash)

How long after getting caught does it normally take for the letter to arrive?

your speedo will be overreading anything up to 10% so the chances are you were under the limit. DOnt beat yourself up til u get the ticket.

A few images that I got over the Easter break just outside Mullingar on the Delvin road (About 200m north of thr by-pass) early one morning after going out for some early morning pics.

These new Mobile Bank Deposit vans are popping up all over the place!
Looking South towards Mullingar. You can just see the on-ramp to Dublin in the distance.

    delvinroadmullingarearl.jpg

    Looking North towards Delvin.
Note the close proximity to the speed limit sign in the background.
    delvinroadmullingarearl.jpg

The view looking west, from across the road.
The van was actually parked around a very slight bend in the road and was not easy to see till right up close.

I hope that no one on Boards was asked to make a deposit after the holidays.

Were the "manned vehicle" patches always on them or is that a more recent thing?

No, colour is not important, markings are.
Only unmarked vans are used for surveys, all the other vans regardless of colour are used for enforcement (sure aren't many of the marked ones white anyway).

Don't also forget that the Gardaí have their own vans in various colours. These vans don't usually have markings and can be used covertly.

I drove past a van in wexford today came around the bend and it was there i slowed as i past and looked at the clock i was doing around 103km/hr will i be done for this? there was no flash or anything?

    2 of these at the weekend - Cavan & Leitrim..Only 1 situated on what I'd consider a semi-dangerous road.

On a side note: Kudos to the people of Cavan / Leitrim for their advanced warning of the vans, nearly every second driver flashed me..I returned the favour by warning the next few kms of drivers. ;)
Were the "manned vehicle" patches always on them or is that a more recent thing?

I'd say they are new..due to all the arson attacks on the vans

See an old stock pic here:

the flash is the camera. its not there to tell you if your caught.
They only flash when there's not enough light to read your reg.
Even at night, in a well lit area, they may not flash.

I thought i was caught about 2 months ago. I was doing about 110km in 100km just outside Midleton. I was overtaking a lorry on the outside lane of the dual carraige way. The fact that i havent got a letter after 2 months does that mean im in the clear?

I have received two letters for speeding this year and both were issued within a week of being caught. It is probably safe to say that you got away with it...;)

No flash in the window. Just an unmarked van at the side of the road in Kildare.

    Let's see...
    - Good line of sight in both directions
    - Well surfaced, clearly marked road
    - Hard shoulder almost as wide as the lane itself
    - Early morning so quiet on the road
    - Parked just beyond the bend at the reduced speed limit sign

Nope... Nothing at all to do with revenue generation there at all

their argument may be that it is on the approach to an accident area.

you hardly expect them to park right at s dangerous spot, anyway the system they use obviously has certain operating parameters that require certain site conditions, ie. xxmeters straight/ curve of no more than x drgrees etc

anyway. a location like that makes them easier to spot and adjust your speed if necessary

Anyone know what times of day these vans operate? I was driving to work yesterday morning and passed one at 7.15am and I was doing about 60k in a 50k zone :(...I've never seen one before at that time of the morning so I'm hoping that it was only setting up or something?
