Hi all, finishing college in June and have been going through the recruitment process with a few of places. I'm in the fortunate position of going into such a strong sector :) I have final interviews three big IT companies(don't want to say who they are) I'm at the stage where I've finished 1st round interviews and passed technical tests so just have to meet senior management + HR and make the big choice. I need some advice from people who think a grad position is the right way to go. I have read some stuff about one org saying they drive you hard but they reward you well. Another involves 6 months training in Galway(which would be great) then I'd be placed in Dublin. I'd appreciate if anyone could give me some advice. Thanks.

It might depend on the type of work/role it is.

Thanks for the reply. Final interview coming up(with my no 1 choice) with senior staff. Position is graduate software engineer(so a junior). My core skills would be java, business analysis and I like working with db's. I was also thinking it would be nice to work in a smaller software house where there's more of a chance for recognition. Or would there be the same opportunities with some of the big tech companies?

It could be either. I think you'd have more opportunities in a bigger places tbh. But big or small it will mostly depend on the culture of the place and the managers you have. But also the work you are doing. You might get stuck on a big project, or lots of little ones. If you want lots of varied experience quickly, you can't beat contracting. Of course if its not working out you could move on after 6 months.

True. Definitely worth getting the experience(and training) in a big org then looking at the options if unhappy or bored! Thanks a mil!

I'd be more particular about the specific work you'll be doing and the skillset you are using rather than the size of the company. IT is all about technical skills, the projects you've done, and your people skills. You need to be ticking those boxes.

True, I want to be working with new technologies on exciting projects, not sat in front of a screen testing 8hr's a day. Definitely some food for thought when it comes to asking interviewers some q's!
