    Hey brides,

Any of you having a dress related meltdown?

I was in the shop yesterday and had one picked out to the point that I was nearly going to book it (having said that, the pressure with regards to time was probably getting to me!) but then when I was on the way home I was second guessing myself and couldn't even remember what the dress looked like, all I could think about was net curtains :D

So how do you make the decision?

What sort of time schedule have the shop said? If possibly I won't make the purchase under pressure. If you have time use it!

When you say pressure, was it the sales assistant or are you under pressure cos your wedding's coming up??
It's hard to know when you find the ideal dress. I tried on a good few in different shops and found I was always coming back to the same style. Ended up buying in a sale (where there was pressure from the sales people!) but I knew I wanted the dress from trying on previously. Ok some of the details weren't the same in every shop but the price was right. If you have time, go round as many places as you can and see if there's one you keep going back to. No harm taking time to think about it - it's a big expense after all. Best of luck :)

Thanks for the replies... The assistant wasn't being pushy (I have been in pushy shops, believe me!) but was just saying that with there being 6 months left till I'll be wanting to collect it, that they'd need to get the order in soon. I don't know exactly what takes 6 months but its a figure I've heard in a few shops. Due to this, that and the other I've left it near to this "deadline" and just started panicking!

I've had a good think today and I reckon one of the two dresses I saw in the shop yesterday will be it - however to make myself more confident that I am making the right choice am going to try to go to a few more places during the week - and if nothing else pops out will pick one of those next Sat. I think I've heard so many times that people say when they put on "the" dress that they know instantly.. but maybe that doesn't happen everyone.

Ah that's good that you've got one in mind :)
I've heard people saying that you'd usually order about 6 months in advance alright. As regards 'the' dress, I think I did find it but just didn't like the price tag! At the end of the day, as long as it's the right shape and that for you they're all made to look gorgeous!

Ok I was like you. I didn't think that 'feeling' when you try on YOUR dress existed.
I had tryed on loads of dresses, and like you was stuck between 2. I'd told myself that I would just pick one as they were both lovely.
I went to one last bridal shop..... the second dress I tryed on...wow.
I started to cry. It was really overwhelming, and I just knew!
So I don't think you have found your dress yet, sorry

The delivery time is complete bull to try and push you into getting a dress there and then. I got that talk over and over but when it came to ordering the dress (last week) I was told it will be in at the end of may and they will need the balance payment then. My wedding is in Sept and I was getting panicked but there was no need. My dress is La Sposa so its coming from Spain. Maybe check where the dress comes from.

I ordered the Denia. I just love it :) I got mine in the Bridal Studio in Stradbally and it was by far the best dress shopping experience I had. Some of the other places were such a let down

Thanks so much for all your replies.. I think my gut feeling was right to look around further, because I've went to a shop today and saw TWO dresses that I loved, both of them were ones I'd happily choose and not a meltdown in sight which would suggest that the original dress just wasn't it...

Think I'll be making a final decision pretty soon!

I just googled the Denia cos I'm nosey :o

It's absolutely gorgeous, I'd love something like that myself but it's far too early for me to be looking at dresses:(

You'll look amazing in that dress:)

i too think the 6 mths thing is nonsense, and I base that on what I have been told by someone who works in a bridal shop!
the order for your dress takes 12-16 weeks maximum for most dresses, and actually is usually even less for certain designs. So max 4 mths is needed and this includes fitting time etc. The shop don't even order it before then, as they don't want to have to hold on to your dress 2 months longer than necessary.

plus, my mate (who works in a bridal shop!) recommends that you do not collect your dress any more than 1 week before the big day. It is safer to leave it in the shop rather than risk any accidental damage at home (she cites the case of a girl who insisted on taking her dress home 1 mth before the wedding and 2 weeks before her 3 yr old niece spilled orange all over it!).
Ordering too far in advance can also result in getting the wrong size!

    have you checked adverts.ie?
there is someone selling dresses NEW http://www.adverts.ie/wedding/wedding-dress/531173

I don't know are they your size :)

I got mine on sale for 300 Euro and cost me 95Euro for alternations in Drogheda.
I was told by wedding dress maker that you shouldn't pay more than 300-400 for a dress because that is its real value.
Imagine if on sale shop can sell for 200 Euro yet beforehand was 2000 Euro?

Update - have bought one of the dresses mentioned earlier, am delighted. Meltdown over! The lady in the shop was not at all bothered about the whole 6 months thing, says she's had to deal with much more constrained time frame. So happy days!!:D

    I don't know exactly what takes 6 months .
An awful lot of wedding dresses are made in China (for all brides to be in the whole wild world), and that's why it takes at least six months to ensure you will get what you want when you want it.
Even the dresses that are supposed to come from Spain are made in China to start with... but with a better marketing obviously.

Think also about the many times you will need to go back for fittings. Consider a shop that is not too far from you to avoid inconvenience of having to travel there everytime they will need you.

What about a local Irish dress maker? (I work for an airline myself, so not trying to post an add here!) I had my dress done by a local dress maker, 5 minutes only from work. Ideal to pop in after work!

you don't honestly think that you choose a dress, and then an order is placed via the company to china to make your dress specifically??? as if!
each manufacturer, under whatever name, Dessy, Pronuptia etc etc have a stock of their collection in different sizes. Your dress shop simply orders from their supplier from the stock they have on hand. If there is no stock on hand then the factory run up a few more. Most dresses are not bespoke designer gowns, they are from a collection by a specific company.

and, as many people who have bought their dresses direct from China will tell you, it takes nothing like 6 months for a dress to be made in China - more like 6 days and then freight time.

The 6 mths thing is purely for business reasons - the dress shops want your deposit and order as early as possible and then they have more money in their cashflow. you could order your dress 10 mths before the big day - almost guaranteed the dress shop will only place a provisional order for you with the supplier, but they will not place the final order until about 16 weeks before you are due to collect it. In the mean time your deposit pays for the cost of them ordering the dress, so they are covered. In the case where you don't bother to collect your dress, they are not stuck with a dress they have to fork out for themselves.

Little Ted, this is exactly what was explained to me in several bridal shops (Dublin city center and smaller towns) when I did the rounds for my own dress and I asked for the reason of the 6 months timeframe. Someone also added that they need this type of time just in case they need to send the dress back to China in case of gross mistake on cutting of the dress… which had happened to them too close to an actual wedding day, and they never wanted this type of problem never again…

If your theory of suppliers stocks exists (where are the suppliers based anyway?), then why all the fuss about taking personal measurements in the first place? And why on hearth brides to be are charged for tailored services? If all wedding dresses are stocked somewhere, then we should all be able to walk in a shop and buy it off the racks, the way it's done in the likes of Debenhams or Monsoon, where off the rack wedding dresses are usually a third of the so called "made to measure" prices.
We shouldn’t be lied to and made to believe that it’s made to measure if it’s not.

As for China’s 6 days internet’s orders, yes I’ve been through that road as well, -what a disaster!-, well it would only be natural that from the biggest manufacturers, smaller ones grow and try to go independent. It’s such a lucrative business!

Now this might not apply to every wedding shop, but please do tell us more about your own experience/knowledge. Maybe you work in the industry yourself?

I would love a tv channel to take this subject onboard and dig in the subject a bit more. I’m sure we would all learn a lot.
