iv been told that by leaving my laptop plugged in all the time it can drain the battery, is this true. when its fully charged and plugged in it says "fully charged, not charging" so will this mean it wont drain it as its not charging it or is it best to let the battery run down before charging again

Leaving it plugged in will not drain the battery. Modern batteries like to be topped up always. There's no need to run it completely down and charge it up. Just charge when ever you can and dont worry about leaving it plugged in all the time. The system is designed to stop charging when the battery is full charged.

A modern lap-top battery is "smart" in so much that it contains or uses a smart charger. The charger is designed to charge the battery efficiently to ensure maximum charge and maximum battery life. All modern lap-top batteries are a form of Lithium-Ion cell, most of the characteristics that people associate with batteries are from older technologies Lead-Acid, Nickel Metal Hydride or Nickel Cadmium.
