theres been alot of storys going around recently of english born players looking to play with the Republic Of Ireland.
this got me thinking about other's who are eligible but who havnt really shown interest in playing for Ireland and those who havnt been mentioned.
    some of these include:
    Jamie O'Hara (Wolves)
    Matt Kilgallon (Doncaster)
    Anton Ferdinand (Sunderland)
    Kevin Nolan (Newcastle)
    Kyle Naughton (Leicester)
    Gary O'Neil (West Ham)
    Darren Ambrose (Crystal Palace)
    Mark Noble (West Ham)
    is there much others?

also, what player who have delclared for ther countries of birth were eligible to play for ireland? i know Rooney has irish blood in him but was he eligible? same for Jamie Carragher.

also, is there players from anywhere other than the British Isles who is eligible for Ireland or was eligible for Ireland?

Do these players not have to have Irish Passports at the time they played underage football for their country of birth?

Loads of Aussies and Yanks are eligible.

Gary O'Neil would be a good player to have. Couldn't understand why no premier league teams tried to sign him when 'Boro were relegated, he was wasted in the championship for 18 months. Very good player.

Wouldn't have thought so, do they even have to have Irish passports if they do play for Ireland?

like who? theres a difference between being eligible and having just irish ancestary.
youd think the likes of Tim Cahill, Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey have irish ancestary but it could well be too far back in order for em to have been eligible.

I've often wondered does Benni McCarthy have irish ancestry.

    Stephen Ireland (Newcastle)
He scored against Wales in a competitive game so you should probably take him off the list. We know by now that he's eligible.

Really? Always thought he was a useful player, but that's it, don't think he would make much of a difference to the team

Because their parent can get a passport and that would allow them to get one.

I might be wrong about the passport thing but afaik the only criteria for eligibility for a national team is citizenship.
Which is why you see Brazilian players playing for Croatia, Morocco, UAE and a few other countries despite having no ties to those countries.

Amauri is the best example of this really. Has played in Serie A, gained citizenship by marrying a girl with citizenship, and realised he'd never play for Brazil, so now he's 'Italian'.

You could add Marcos Senna to the list too.

I remember playing an older version of Championship manager where it listed Kieron Richardson as being eligible to play for Ireland, not sure if it's true or not.

I didn't know Darren Ambrose could play for us, very nice player, not sure if he's any better than Fahey but he is a good player.

Difference being Senna in his pomp was good enough to play for Brazil. Amauri on the other hand is just plain old rubbish. :p

when he was at Palermo he was in amazing form and if he hadn't picked up injuries he'd have been in a few squads. Dunga said as much.

cahill was eligible for scotland too.

  • Dont think any of these have been mentioned yet:

Paul Scholes - Imagine him and Keane in the middle for Ireland in their pomp. We wouldnt have wasted him on the left side of midfield either.

    Martin Keown

    Aaron Lennon

    Steve Mcmanaman

    Steve Bruce

    Darren Fletcher

    Vinny Jones

    Zat Knight

    Gazza

    Kevin Keegan

    Peter Reid

    Lucas Neill

Di Stefano - not sure on this, possibly had an Irish grandmother. Actually lots of Argies with Irish roots. Probably none of them eligible anymore, but a couple of generations ago they would have been.

Che Guevara - handy left winger in his day.

He palyed U17 when he was 13/14.I read it somewhere he treated it like a holiday to go to Samoa to visit his grandparents.Seems strange that he was willing to go to court in 2002 to play for us but when the rules were changed in 04 he declared for OZ.

I heard thats because he was desperate to play in that World Cup but when the rules changed it only allowed players to declare for the country of their birth. FIFA have since changed the rules again. Anyway if he played for Ireland he would be called Cahill instead of K-hill
