I'm 22 just been let go from work and I'm faced with the monumental decision of whether to go back to college for a masters or feck off to Oz with a few pals for a year or more

Claiming the dole is not an option.

I have enough cash to do one or the other so I leave it to the boardsies to decide my future.

So, rain, poverty, alcoholism, Coppers and education
    OR
wage slave, alcoholism, sun and aussie girls with a fetish for pasty irish skin.

Your choice (and i may revisit this thread in a few months with proof of your decision.

Why not emigrate and do the masters there? Works and jobs forum is <-- that way!

Oz is really the only choice!

Go and have a laugh for a while over there man! Relax after completing your degree. You can always return and do a masters whenever you want.

If you get your Masters, you'll be able to go to Ozz not worrying about future career prospects.

What's the Masters in? Is it anything useful? If yes, need more info. If no, you either have a ****LOAD of money are should be booking a ticket by now.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Masters, then you'll have an extra string to your bow when you emigrate - you might have to emigrate for a long time the way things are here, so perhaps best to get your education completed, then head off.

Perfecting the use of a bow when its only made up one string can be hard enough, so an extra string would surely make it a lot harder to master! no?

better to stay and do the masters imo, when you come back you'll be less qualified than alot of people finishing college now, and may have "missed the boat" in relation to jobs created as the economy starts to recover.
the trip to Oz is only a year, the job you get can effect the rest of your life.

get all your education out of the way then run free and live the dream my friend!!!!! :)

What is your degree in, and what are you thinking to do your masters in?

Perhaps you can do a distance learning masters and emigrate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,943 ✭✭✭wonderfulname

That depends on the strength of the masters you are considering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

No chance of trying to get some work in oz with your degree, they might pay for you to do you master at a later date! Yes i'm an optimist!

What's your area of study? :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭longhalloween

I did a degree in archaeology and history, not too useful now the construction industry has gone kaput, got a job in something entirely unrelated till now.

If i was gonna do a masters it would be in something like osteo-archaeology (study of human remains for you philistines)

TBH I had my heart set on joining the gardaí and since there's no sign of them recruiting anytime soon I just want to keep myself busy in the meantime.

(note the similarities of osteaoarchaeology and forensics?? Could be handy to have)

I would tell you a masters. You could just emigrate and get a semi ****ty job, doing a masters could mean a difference in how much you get paid, and the entry level of your job.

    What did you study?

I take it your degree was 3 years? If so, you don't have much to lose by doing a masters. We still have cheap education in comparison to other countries.

If you're not genuinely interested then don't waste your time or money, go to oz and turn yourself into the perfect garda recruit.

Why not do your Masters in Oz? Solves both problems!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,029 ✭✭✭shedweller

Go. You'll broaden your horizons, learn more and pick up that can do attitude that got me a peachy (well, to me anyway) job when i came back from NZ.
And of course you'll get a killer tan and get to have BBQ's at Christmas, look at the moon upside down most nights, see constellations that you've never seen before...oh wait, wrong forum! LOL!!

Seriously, go. You most likely won't regret it. I didn't.
    Send a postcard!

Since you're only 22 I'd go to OZ.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

If you can get a grant do the masters. You can always emigrate but you won't have many chances to do the masters and have it paid for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭Oh_Noes

Do your masters while you have the money to do it and are academically still fresh. Going back to do it in a few years will make it harder.

Oz is a kip and wasting your money on a year long piss up would be unwise at a pivotal time in your life. A lot of economists are arguing that Australia will be going the way of Ireland soon which is believable, friends I have out there said that the cost of living makes rip-off Ireland look reasonable. Housing market is inflated etc...

You could always consider doing a postgrad cert or a H. Dip to expand your academic horizons and masters options a bit if you don't think your industry is going to be busy for the next while.

Forgot about your 1 year away in OZ. You will have to come back after a year.
My advice: go anywhere so long as won't come back. Society has seriously let this country down. The so called educated are sheer and utter stupid. No amount of degrees will ever help you through life by lying down rolling in exploitation.

When all my friends decided to go travelling I stayed home in Ireland to complete my Masters. Looking back now it was one of the biggest mistakes I made. I ended up in debt, missed out on seeing the world and TBH having the Masters didn't make a difference to my job opportunities.

If I could go back 2 years I would pack my bags and head off travelling. If you still want to do a Masters you can do that when you come home, even if you have to do it part-time. I'm working full-time now and I cant forsee when I will have the chance to go travelling.

If you have the money and are genuinely interested in a field of specialisation then you should most definitely do your masters first. That said I wouldn't do my masters here, I'd rather do it abroad as chances are you'll be able to get a qualification from a better university and broaden your horizons at the same time.

It's extremely expensive. You have to pay fees and at international rates as well. It costs thousands of euro. I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd say do a masters and then you may still need to emigrate, but at least you'll have a better chance of a decent job. Tbh, so many people backpacking around Australia have degrees that it's hard to get a decent job with just that, unless you're in a field that's experiencing a shortage over there. Check that out by the way.

If you do go to Australia, you can make it cost-neutral. I mean if you work there, you can make enough to live on and keep the savings you currently have in the bank. Then you could come back and do a masters? Just an idea, though personally I'd finish your college studies without a gap. It would be hard to go back.

    go to australia!

it depends alot where ur going and wat ur doing ... is no point to leave just for fun with some pals and some cash in ur pocket ... Before u leave make sure u check ... http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/working+living+abroad.html

Tbh, I have not read the replys you have had to your question. But imho, travel. You'll only reget it later. It is something you can put on your cv, it broadens the person. If I was a boss and had 2 people with the same qualifications, and one had trveled, Id take him on as he heas had the balls to go out and experiance the world. Get a job over ther, learn, then if you need to, come back to colledge. You'll not regret it. I am way over 40, and now have a lifetime of, i wish i hads.Go for it ****er. Most of all, have fun.

    ONE LIFE, LIVE IT.

speaking from experience get the education out of the way first, it will be a dose trying to come up with the money for it when you come back from travelling

I am in a similar situation with similar thoughts running through my head. I'm doing a work placement at the mo (graduated last year) and all my friends are heading to oz at the end of the year. I thought about a masters but the thought of doing it straight after 4th year turned me off it. Anyways I keep thinking that later this year when my placement is over what will I do IF they offer me a proper full time job...my answer- I'll turn it down. I get the "but you'll be lucky to have a job" malark. The truth is when i'm sitting there in my office in dull rainy Ireland with no friends as theyve all left for australia and enjoying themselves and their new lives it'll be the biggest regret of my life. Sitting on a nice sunny beach in oz with my bestest buddies I will NOT be thinking "I regret not staying in Ireland". Even if job hunting doesnt go too well and it all doesnt really work out at least I'll know that i gave it a shot.

You'll never regret going, but you'll regret staying.

    Emigration by a country mile......

I'm doing an engineering masters at the moment. No other way to describe it, its just destroying my life. GTFO and enjoy yourself.

I voted masters because the poll was Emigration (44) to Masters (43) just to even it up and make it harder for you decide.
He He He. Seriously though, It's your decision!
