A certain ruler asked him, 'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother.' He replied, 'I have kept all these since my youth.' When Jesus heard this, he said to him, 'There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! [Lk. 18:18-23]

    Indeed.

    Still though, pretty cool. :D

Those pictures don't really tell the full story in situations like this. Often, modern restorations hack off the well-intentioned but inaccurate work of previous restorers who didn't have access to modern equipment.

Well I gave you the link to read the rest of the story yourself, practically
sheaving the eyes off of the figures & many of the details on the body is
the full story I was trying to convey but if you can tell me why that's a
good thing I'm all ears (or non-sheaved-off eyes as the case is here :D).

Thing is that if you read the link they have found consistency in their
explanation of why this is a bad thing:
A commanding feature of many of the figures, the eyes appear in many
instances to have been painted buon fresco. Wherever they have not been
painted buon fresco but added a secco, they have been removed by the
    restorers.

Wow, you're not allowed wear shorts into the place but the walls are plastered with more toned áss and bulging six packs than a chippendales convention.

am i missing something here OP?
dont get me wrong, im all for jesus bashing when it comes to ridiculous things, but you dont need that link (admittedly cool) to prove that the Vatican is full of ****. they all want us to donate money at mass, when the vatican is 1 of the (arguably) richest/most powerful "countries" in the world, with hidden assets all over the globe, but it changes nothing really. That quote you put there just goes to show that the pope is going to hell, which we all know already (if there was such a thing:rolleyes:)

On a side note, I remember watching "Good Will Hunting" and hearing the line "I bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel". If you've never been, it smells like fat, sweaty Americans.

Oh and protip: To get back to the Basillica, do not leave via the door you entered even though you are told to. Leave via the door at the back and just tell the guard you are late in catching up with your group. It will save you about a half hour walk.

A good excuse to post a link to last week's 15 min R4 spot on everyone's favourite badass pope, Alexander VI (link - 1 day left to listen).

Alexander was elected through massive bribery in the first conclave held in the new Sistine chapel, a few years before Julius II (outspent by Alexander for the papacy) had the ceiling painted. In fact, a big reason that Julius had Michelangelo in to do the ceiling was that he wanted to excel his great and notorious rival.

Alexander (born Rodrigo Borgia) was a capable administrator, a wily and unscrupulous politician, and a lavish patron of the arts. However, he used the job of Pope mostly to advance the interests of his numerous illegitimate children. When not hard at work for the Borgia family, Alex lived like a renaissance Berlusconi. His master of ceremonies, Johann Burchard, describes an early bunga-bunga party:
"On Sunday evening, October 30th, Don Cesare Borgia [the Pope's murderous son] gave a supper in his apartment in the apostolic palace, with fifty decent prostitutes or courtesans in attendance, who after the meal danced with the servants and others there, first fully dressed and then naked. Following the supper too, lampstands holding lighted candles were placed on the floor and chestnuts strewn about, which the prostitutes, naked on the floor and on their hands and knees, had to pick up as they crawled in and out amongst the lampstands. The pope, Don Cesare and Donna Lucrezia [Alex's scandal-tainted daughter] were all present to watch. Finally, prizes were offered--silken doublets, pairs of shoes, hats and other garments--for those men who were most successful with the prostitutes. This performance was carried out in the Sala Reale and those who attended said in fact the prizes were presented to those who won the contest."

Even in death, Alex proved obscene. After his death from fever in the unhealthy Roman summer, his corpse turned black and blue, and - already large - swelled to huge size. He was eventually rolled up in a carpet and jammed into his coffin by the carpenters. His immediate successor, Pius III (Pope for just 26 days before his own death in suspicious circumstances) apparently refused to say mass for Alex's soul, saying it was blasphemous to pray for the damned.

The local chipper here in darkest Sandymont is called "Borza's". I've never quite had the cojones to ask them if they were related, in case they try to deep fat fry me or something.
