5 West would be your best bet.

We get this one quite good in Connemara with an 60cm dish, used to have an 80cm one, did not seem to make much difference to reception.

Just about, if it's dedicated to 5W only. Slightly marginal in rain.

I've used a 60cm Sky dish about 120km further north-west of Mullingar for the French channels, and they've been rock-steady, even in the rain. And that's with an older Sky dish, that's probably past its prime and with the older style LNB with the limited available skew.

It's worth pointing out that you don't get all the French terrestrials FTA at 5west or anywhere else. The specific channels you get FTA are France 2, France 3, France 5, France O, ARTE, TV8, KTO and LCP.

TF1 and M6 are pay only on 5 west but M6 is FTA at 9 east.

At the risk of being called a pedant (again), ARTE is only FTA on 5W in analogue.

Also, there are about 15-odd French channels on 5W FTA. Maybe not at the same level of programming as the national channels, but still worth keeping, I'd often be flicking through and come across a programme or report worth stopping on. Mirabelle, Normandie, NRJ Paris, Vosges TV, TMC and TV8 Mont Blanc are ones that immediately spring to mind. And most of them have decent enough web-sites for checking out schedules, particularly good if you're trying to improve your French.
