That all depends on how you're doing.

Not driving between lessons will usually lengthen your time taken to progress to passing the test - its very possible that moving to two lessons a week is going to ultimately work out the same or even less in terms of actual lessons paid for over time.

How do you find your instructor ? Do you trust them ? If you're happy with the relationship you'd hope to presume they're not in it to rip you off but giving you guidance as to how they think you personally will progress better.

Again if you do say 1 lesson a week over 10 - 15 weeks, moving to 2 a week does not necessarily mean you're going to now do 20 - 30 lessons - you may progress considerably faster than the 1 lesson a week schedule.

I know if I was not able to drive at all between lessons I would definitely give strong consideration to doing two a week. I suspect that would ultimately work out cheaper for me due to better retention of skills learned.

Without driving experience in between lessons, getting lessons can be pretty useless. This is what I found anyway. It was not until I started really getting out and driving around a lot (albeit most times illegally; on my own on the Learner's Permit) that my driving truly improved to the point where I was becoming more and more competant and confident.

Lessons are essential, IMO, but equally as essential is getting as many driving hours under your belt as you can. If you are worried, contact a friend (who has held their full licence for 2 years!) and get them to come out with you and get a bit of experience. Even if it's only mundane stuff like driving to a friend's house, going to the shops, etc., it all adds up and will help you in the long run.

Until you start going out and driving in between the lessons, I think the lessons are pretty redundant. I found that anyway. Maybe it's different for others, but I think that getting experience of independent driving is more essential than cramming in more and more lessons.

I'd echo what DazMarz said and say you need to start going out driving between lessons. There is some stuff that just takes time for you to learn and while lessons compliment experience well, you need to be getting as much experience as you can which would cost a huge amount if only done through lessons.

Like the song says tho: everyone's gotta learn sometime.

If we were all so petrified with fear about driving, there'd be no cars on the road. I remember I used to be freaked by urban driving, wondering how anyone could even manage the stress and horror of driving through a busy town/city. Now, I'm driving through Dublin and elsewhere with little or no trouble. Taking the bull by the horns and going for it is the best way.

I think you'd probably be better doing 2 lessons a week rather than the 1 - especially if you're not driving in between them. I was a bit the same and my instructor noticed a massive change when I was doing lessons twice a week. Due to the hours of my job at the time, I didn't have a chance to practice during the week but the extra lesson really helped.
I had my test booked when I switched from 1 lesson to 2 and my instructor didn't think I'd do well at all. By the end of 10 lessons (2 a week) and a pretest, he said that he'd noticed a massive change and that I could possibly do it. I didn't but that was more due to nerves than anything.
